Militant Vegans Annoy Me
If you're a vegan or vegetarian - fine. Be So. But don't try to convert me. I like meat, and I feel no pity for chickens or fish. The chicken had it coming dammit, for being...well... a CHICKEN!

Seriously though - I do hate when militant (not all Vegans mind ya) vegans try to impose their decision on me. It's a lot like the born agains, who try to get you over to their camp.

3. And militant meat eaters annoy me.
And I AM a meat eater, and have no shame in being so.

It's not about vegans or meat eaters - or anyth specific issue, really - the real issue is that some people are just militant assholes. And being militant about anything is what makes one an asshole.

The vegans who insist on being militant assholes are just as annoying - in fact, I find them less annoying - than the meat eating militant assholes who are so threatened by vegetarians of any stripe that they feel the need get defensive and engage in militant assholery of their own, and who cast dispersion and abuse upon vegetarians, even the quiet ones who simply say "I don't eat meat".

6. Exactly
I don't mind vegetarians who keep in on the down-low. In fact, usually doing so makes me a bit interested as to why their a vegetarian, how they cook, etc.

But one says "You can't eat that - it's DEAD!!!" I usually run for the door.

8. Born again vegans are the worst
With their "God created chicken legs to run away, not to dip in BBQ sauce" or "Jesus' last meal was bread and wine, not surf and turf". The one I hate the most is "If God wanted us to eat meat, he would have made *every* cow USDA grade". x(

12. Depends where you are
In the midwest and southwest, I did meet militant carnivores.

But in California, you get militant vegetarians and vegans. I used to work for one - his name was Jobs. Steve Jobs. The one time I met him he chided me for eating the chicken wings at the OSX release party.

One can't throw a stick without hitting a "Meat is Murder" sign in the San Francisco area.
As someone who eats vegetarian meals frequently (I like veggies, so sue me.) I do agree that there are even more militant meat-eaters around.

20. Obnoxious judgemental meat-eaters outnumber
opinionated vegans by hundreds to one. I've been a vegan for 15 years. I don't give a damn what anyone else eats and don't try to change anyone else's diet but my own. In all that time I have never seen anyone get pushy about being a vegetarian. Never.

Yet rarely a week goes by that some obnoxious meat eater doesn't insult vegetetarians after seeing what I'm eating, state that vegetarians are deluded and hurting ourselves, or go off on a rant about how evil vegetarians are for pushing their diets on others.

I truly think this is meat eaters projecting up on vegetarians. Get over it and mind your own plate.

37. Well come to Arcata or Berkeley CA someday
They're great cities, don't get me wrong. It's nice being in the majority, and even considered "conservative" because you aren't a Green Party Die-Hard, Eat Meat, drive a car and watch TV (and cut your hair, and/or shave your legs.)

But the entire downtown area of Arcata has nary a meat restaraunt, and the nearest diner that does advertises "we have both Veg AND Meat dishes!"

I still remember getting barked at for using a leash on my "Animal Companion"

When I worked in Cambridge, MA (Berkeley of the East) I worked with three vegetarians and one vegan who climbed the soap box at lunch every day. It was annoying because people essentially told them to MYOB and they would start over the next day. I'm not talking about normal conversations about diet choices (something that was discussed frequently,) I'm talking about railing on the same tired talking points. On the other hand, as someone who rarely ate any meat products in the cafeteria I had to deal with insecure omnivores who climbed the soapbox too. I refused to say whether I was a vegetarian because it annoyed me that they thought it was an aberrant lifestyle.

Arcata, now that place is in a league of its own.

34. I think I'm funny, too, but apparently it's you and me!
BTW, hubby really is a lapsed Hindu.

He was born and raised Hindu and was strictly veggie until 2 years ago when he was doing some work in Seattle. I wanted seafood so badly while there but we only had a weekend and he couldn't handle the smell (he has always been very tolerant of my and our son's meat eating).

My son and I had just returned home when he called me one night and asked if I could please buy some salmon for his return.

I nearly dropped the phone--:wtf:

He had had a business dinner and he just decided he was going to try someone's salmon--and he LOVED it.

After 33 years of never touching dead flesh.

I was spitting POed and I've never forgiven him for "discovering" seafood--FIVE DAYS after dissuading me from eating it in its native habitat, so to speak.

Our tenth anniversary is next month in Las Vegas--he WILL pay and I've already told him he will!

15. I've never met a "militant" vegan or vegetarian.
The vegetarian to whom I am the closest is my sister, who has been a vegetarian since she was fifteen (nearly 28 years now). Never once in 28 years has she tried to convert me. I have lots of online friends who are vegetarians or vegans, and none of them has ever tried to convert me either. Some present information in the context of a larger discussion, but it's my choice what to do with that information.

28. There are far more ads
for meat, for drugs, for sex, for hemoroid creams and for almost anything else. So there's a few ads by vegetarians. So what?

As for taxing meat, it's already a huge beneficiary of government subsidies. If we just stopped throwing our tax dollars at the meat industry you wouldn't be able to afford the stuff. The tax is nothing.

Taxing meat is an idea. Go ahead and disagree with the the idea. Oppose it if it ever gets discussed as serious public policy. But why do you have to go insulting all vegetarians?

41. Who was insulting anyone?
One poster said they'd never seen any push by vegans or vegetarians to try to convert others to their way of thinking. I put out the billboards as an example of the fact that it DOES happen.

How is citing a FACT an insult?

Your final sentence only goes to show, again and in another form, that it does happen.

sort of pisses on vegans, or at least the food that is consumed by a vegan, in generality.

So, specifically:

Which vegans have tried to "convert" you, and which ones have imposed their "dicision" on you? The "born agains" base their issue in belief, whereas many (not all, of course) animal advocates (not always vegan) base issues in fact (cruelty, etc.).

When has any vegetarian/vegan tried to force you to not eat meat?

When has any vegetarian/vegan on DU called you a LOON for being a meateater?

When has any vegetarian/vegan made complete and total mock of you and everything YOU believe in?

When a v/v tries to stand up for what they believe, it doesn't make them militant. It is trying to correct complete and total misconceptions and to try and counter the vile attacks that take place with mind-numbing regularity on here - and other places.

You can eat all the meat you want and die an earlier death because of high cholesterol and heart disease. That's fine by me. ;)

I don't even care if people try to convert me to their way of eating. I may well learn something in the process, so even if I choose not to change, what have I lost?

No matter what your diet, lay off the  every now and then.
