I have been kind of sad today
I got to thinking about my maternal grandmother (who died before I was born - at the age of 43). I am going to be turning 42 in a couple of weeks and her death really hit home for me today. I have been told that I look a lot like her, and that she adored the grandchildren she had a chance to spend time with.

2. Aww, KW, sorry you have been blue.
 I never had the chance to know my paternal grandparents or my maternal grandfather, all having died before I was born. And my maternal grandmother died when I was 11. :(

I know the feelings. :pals:

4. I know how you feel ...
My mother died when she was 34. My father died when he was 39. I am now 38. It is very strange, indeed, to consider that one is older than a relative ever lived to be. I think it's very valuable, though. It helps us remember that every day is precious.

Peace.

14. Have a glass on me.

I think it's important to really feel my fear and my sadness every once in a while. Reminds me that I am human. Loss can make a person very cold and distant (at least, many would say it has done so to me).

I'm just a bundle of joy tonight, I know. ;)

Of course I don't mind. You should have seen the language I had in some posts I typed earlier.

I never posted them, but let me tell you, they were loaded with all sorts of adjectives. So many, a sailor would have blushed had he read the posts.

To those who think you otherwise, I say "Fuck 'em, they're trash"

23. If anyone has a right to be angry, it's you and the other folks down
your way. We in the rest of the country have abandoned our own, which one day will be written of as a national disgrace equal to, I don't know, something damn disgraceful that we countenanced in the past.

You ever want to just chuck it for a while and recover from reality fo a few days, we have plenty of room. Lots of stuff to do around here, too.

24. I know that. You're a peach. Please stop thinking about that
age business regarding relatives. It eats a lot of people up unnecessarily.

Just think about a kid with a chicken on his head. I dare you not to, after seeing that picture.

12. I understand your feelings completely, Kitchey
My father died when he was 43. When I turned 40, I had no problem with it. When I turned 50, I had no problem with it. But damn, I could not WAIT to turn 44. For me, it was partly sadness, but also some fear that I would meet the same fate.

I hope you can start to feel better, soon, my friend. Maybe one thing to do, that might initially make you feel a little sadder, but could lead to feeling better, is to see what all you can find out about her. Are there stories about her you haven't heard? Things she did you aren't aware of?Even though she died before you were born, you still have a chance to get to know her.

It is more painful when I hear her sisters (my great aunts) talk about how much I resemble her. I used to dye my hair red, until I heard how much my natural hair was like hers. (I have the very noticeable "bride of Frankenstein" gray streaks in my temples - but since her hair was like that, I refuse to dye it ever again.)

30. My son would understand your melancholy. My parents are long gone,
and Mrs R's parents live in South Africa and Mrs R doesn't particularly like them (and for damn good reason), so he's growing up without grandparents. I wish he didn't have to, but he does.

And also that the pain shall pass, and only the love will remain!

42. Reminds me of my maternal grandfather
I am now 55, the same age my maternal grandfather was when he died.

He died in 1945, during World War II, very shortly before Franklin D. Roosevelt died. My mother was 16 at the time, and I think still in high school (I am not absolutely sure; she might have graduated early). She would later meet my father in college. And I would be born in late 1950.

Every once in a while I have thought about my grandfather, whom I would never meet. Actually he and my mother were not close.

One of those things I wonder about every once in a while: what if?

And I am reminded that I have some nephews and nieces who were born after my father died. They would never know their grandfather.
