Calling all Birders! What is your favorite native bird? What is your
favorite bird song (if different from favorite bird)? I was just out in the yard enjoying the Cardinals singing. My favorite song is the Wood Thrush. I think my favorite bird is the bluebird, though. That blue is just so bluey. Anyway. What do you say? :hi:

1. I actually have two
I love the personality of the Chickadee. They are so friendly and gusty.
But I think gold finches are very pretty.

4. my favorite is the red-headed woodpecker
partly because it is so unusual to see - and I hadn't ever seen them until a couple of years ago when we moved to where we are now - and partly because they look so "modern". Like a painting.

I do like bluebirds as well.

I don't like cowbirds.

I like to hear mockingbirds.

5. song: cucaberra plumage/grandeur: bald eagle
the great horned owl has a lovely hoot, but next to the wild cackling of the cucaberra,
its no where near as exotic sounding.

6. Anna's Hummingbird
Nuttall's Woodpecker is a strong second - both are common sights right outside my window. Barn Owls, which reside and nest in my maple tree for years, are fun to watch and listen too at night. Mockingbirds take the prize for song.

9. I love crested jays
They are so feisty. They're wonderful mimics and just so "don't mess with me" in your face. Songbird? I guess the meadow lark although we don't have many of them around here.

13. Based on personalities.....my favs
Mine's the Blue Jay. They rattle the gutters over our bedroom balcony every morning ... at 6 A.M...for their peanuts. So cute, and yeah, we give in.

The next 3 on my list are the cardinal, robin and mourning doves.....they're very loyal, but wait patiently for their safflower and oiled sunflower seed feeders to be filled, by sitting on the lower deck staring into the kitchen. Also, near the area my husband places raisins.

Oh, then the mockingbirds who RULE the backyard. Apples for them. Or else !

The tiny birds...wrens, finches and chickadees aren't as Bold, but endearing just the same when we fill their "special" feeders.

BUT, gotta also appreciate the role of the Red Tailed Hawk, who needs to eat too, so every now and then our peaceable kingdom is interrupted by

I love the birdies. But our summer main event are the Purple Martins, due to arrive soon. :hi:

14. Herons and egrets.
Although, while I'm visiting in Florida, I've seen a bunch of ibises just grooving in the grass. They're a real treat, with their long, curved beaks.
