Poll question: Which is more gay: Driving a Miata or wearing a Superman T-shirt?
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 03:45 PM by RagingInMiami
Ever since traveling and living in Europe eleven years ago, I've been fond of the convertible roadster. So after returning to the U.S., I told a friend of mine that if I ever make enough money, I would buy a Mazda Miata.

After all, I've always driven Japanese cars and the Miata had received some great reviews. But my friend laughed and told me that the Miata is a "gay car" -- NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. And I didn't let that stop me from liking the Miata.

Then one day he shows up wearing a Superman T-shirt. Back in my wilder clubbing days, when I used to hang out on South Beach, the only men who would wear a Superman T-shirt were gay men. The tighter, the better. NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

And just to clear, neither one of us is homophobic, and in fact, my friend, who is now married and living in LA, has a rainbow sticker on his front door. They're cool like that.

And I still would like a Miata, but I still haven't been able to afford one.

Anyway, I was just talking to him, and we started joking about the Miata/Superman T-shirt thing.

So I wanted to get DUs opinion on this. Which is more gay?

1. I've known a couple straight guys with Miatas
but no gays ones. Of course, the one guy traded it in for that freaky Chevy convertible cartoon car pick-up.

2. Or maybe I should ask
Is the Miata even considered a gay car?

Or is the Superman T-Shirt even considered a gay shirt?

5. No. Your friend is full of shit.
"A Miata is a gay car?" Yeah, right.

You should have figured out that your friend was yanking your chain right away.

6. I figured he was
And it was all said in jest.

But at the same time, I'm sure plenty of gay men drive Miatas. After all, generally speaking, they have good taste when it comes to style.

I'm sure there are more gay men driving Miatas than they are driving Hummers.

7. I've always thought of the Miata as a Los Angeles, bald-spot,
grow-a-ponytail, mid-life crisis kind of car. And the only people wearing Superman t-shirts are Shaq and dorks. So neither is more gay than the other, but the shirt is way lamer than the car...

8. The shirt was very popular with gay men in Miami during the early 1990s
I haven't seen anyone wearing it anymore. But wait, Shaq now lives in Miami, so maybe he can restart the style.

And by the time I'm able to afford a Miata, I will probably be one of those midlife crisis guys.

11. it's a '99 dark blue with a tan top
she totally loves it. only drives it on weekends. it's not very comfortable for her long commute. she got really sporty tires on it now and it rides like an indy car. she's thinking about putting some other kind of tires on it to make it ride a little smoother.

12. I've always viewed it as a second car
A play car, but not necessarily the car you want if you're going to be making long commutes or large purchases.

But for a night out on the town or a day at the beach or to just zip around town doing errands, it's a cool car.

"I've got your lucky charm right here" with an arrow pointing straight down, so to speak...

Pity I didn't get one in time. Would rather have it for gay pride in june...

That or "I'm a super man because I drive a Miata!"

14. I was going to buy my wife a t-shirt that says
"I'm not gay, but my girlfriend is"

and a Miata is not a "gay" car. But those damn ugly Honda boxy things are.

20. The Honda Element?
Those cars are ugly. As a guy who drives a Civic, I'm surprised Honda came out with that model.

15. The Miata is the unofficial car of the childfree
And I have heard that the Subaru is the unofficial lesbian car.

A Superman t-shirt on anyone over the age of about 7 is kinda lame.

24. What if he's driving his girlfriend's Miata?
Obviously not gay, yet still driving said Miata. I used to drive with my ex in her Miata. I liked it, though you certainly feel like you're "wearing" it.

Me? I'm kinda sweet on the new Pontiac Solstice. I know, Pontiac. They're practically Toyotas at this point.
