Figure Skating World Championship Results (spoilers)
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 06:14 PM by flamingyouth

Kimmie Meissner wins the Gold!!!! She was awesome!

Fumie Suguri of Japan won the Silver medal

Sasha Cohen won bronze

Elena Sokolova of Russia was robbed, IMO - she should have placed higher than Sasha. Her skate was way better than Sasha's and she made fewer errors yet she walked away empty handed, which sucks.

But man, Kimmie was on FIRE - I can't wait for the Olympics in 2010. She was unbelievable!

Congrats, Kimmie!!!! :applause:

1. I just can't get into her performances
She certanly can execute the jumps, but everything else does not seem to be there. She stayed on her feet, and that pretty much won her the medal. Her artistic scores were way to high. I also don't agree with the Sokolova scores. She should have gotten bronze. I think Fumie is amazing.

I think this is pretty much the end of Sasha Cohen's eligible career. She says she wants to act, so maybe she can focus on that right now. She is so wonderful when she is on, but she just can't complete a LP.

3. I thought Kimmie was great today
Sokolova was totally robbed. Sasha shouldn't have gotten a medal at all, IMO. She should retire and go make crappy movies and appear on soap operas now.

Sasha did complete a wonderful long program at the US nationals, but that was it. I agree - I think we've seen the end of her as a competitor.

I must be out of the loop (though I follow this sport pretty closely...) but I had no idea Fumie was 25, the same age as Michelle Kwan! She looks much younger to me. She is a great skater and I'm glad she got a medal. :)

6. She certainly had the jumps.....
but there's something lacking in her skating, I don't know just want. I hated the music to her long program. But she seems a nice enough gal.

Poor Joannie, she's going through a rough patch. :( Sasha shouldn't have partied so much then maybe she could have concentrated.

Didn't see Sokolova. Fumie is nothing special to me. ;)

9. I felt really bad for Joannie
I wanted her to get a medal in the Olympics and at the worlds. She's a really talented, beautiful skater, and she seems like a lovely young woman too.

The story about her friend dying in that accident is just heartbreaking.

13. Yeah, you could see it on her face.
I think not winning the gold at the Olympics was a massive letdown for her. But she probably didn't want to look like sour grapes by not competing at the worlds. I think we've seen the end for her, though.

Hopefully she's off doing something fun today.

I've had my butt glued to my couch watching CBC this afternoon (well, I was folding some laundry, so I wasn't a complete slug). :D

But Lynne does love Kimmie, so I know she'll be really excited! :D

22. I don't love Kimmie - I just can't stand that bush-bot twerp Sasha Cohen
But Kimmie made the front page of our newspaper (she trains in Delaware).

I'm guessing Sasha will be posing naked in about 2 years just to revive herself from obscurity

I didn't even know the championship was on tonight. It's cool she's from the area but Sasha Cohen is a suck-up to that chimp boondocking in the White House. I don't care who upstaged Sasha, I'm just glad she didn't win. I think Ms. Cohen is at 14:59 on her clock of celebrityhood

I didn't mean for it to come across like that, Lynne.

We had talked before about being excited about the new younger skaters like Emily and Kimmie in 2010. Again, I apologize if it came across like that. It was not my intention at all.

26. I was pleasantly surprised that Kimmie won...
Her skating today was great. Over on the figure skating boards most of Europeans are whining about "so and so was robbed" and this is one time when I do agree. Sasha Cohen did not deserve the bronze medal, Elena Sokolova did...

One other fact, Kimmie Meissner is the first "lady" to go from competing in the junior ranks to her first senior Worlds and win gold.

She handled herself really well too. No screaming like Tara Lipinski!!!

Congrats to Kimmie. You go girl!!!

:woohoo: :woohoo:

Actually after I posted that, I did realize my mistake.

Oksana really did come out of the blue..

Accept my apology, I'm just really excited for Kimmie. To paraphrase Dick Button, "this should hold her in very good stead"...

34. No need to apologize
I'm guessing most people don't know that about Oksana. Heck, the only reason I remembered it was because the commentators mentioned it.

Poor Sasha. I thought for sure this time she'd make it. I think she'd love to retire from amateur skating but that she wants to go out on a winning note -- whether that means World Champion or Olympic Champion. But it just keeps eluding her. And she seemed really dispirited last night, like she couldn't find it in her to be positive at all.

And YAY!!! for Kimmie.

28. I think Sasha should have been 5th.. I am tired of seeing fallers, medal
I'm sorry, but at this level, if you fall..yer out.

I think jumps should get ZERO credit if they fall..the new system allows for partial credit even if the fall..

That's just asking people to try stuff they cannot do (or should not try) just to get partial credit..

I would rather see a bunch of well-done doubles, and a bunch of skaters splayed out on the ice..

and I sure wish Sasha would go away.,. I am tired of looking at her pouty little mug

Yes, and isn't that inviting serious injury and the resulting suit/scandal and exclamations of "who could have foreseen this tragedy"?

It seems to me that between the Olympics and the World Championships, there were a lot of people skating with injuries. I've got to wonder if those injuries are the result of attempts to do moves they can't complete.

41. I hate the new scoring system..
If a double is worth 4 and a triple is worth 8, why NOT try a a triple if you get 1/2 credit for a fall.. If you get lucky, you get double points..if you miss, you still get credit for an ugly and possibly dangerous fall..

They need to give NO points for anything that results in a fall.. Skaters will always try to do bigger/better, but it would make for medalists with clean programs..

Fumie Sagura must be seething.. She has done two great performances and fallers have beaten her both time..

36. Dang, I missed Sokolova's performance.....
Cohen seems to get a lot of points just because she does that straight up and down splits thing with her legs when she spins and does spirals. That's what one of the commenter's implies. Doesn't make worthy of a metal to me.

To give Cohen credit, she did a great short program, but sure didn't look like she deserved a metal after her long program.
