This is kicking my ass! I'm building a web site from scratch -- oh, man.
stopped at every new step....

I got Evrsoft First Page and set up a couple of rudimentary pages.

I uploaded them to my file system on my cPanel (?) -- the place my host gave me to work.

Now what do I do? I don't know how to get the pages I just uploaded to show up on my web site.

Look at what you get: www.katzenengel.org

How do I get my pages to show up?

I am such a dolt! I don't mind learning from scratch, but I'd really like this to be easier....

You don't have to help. I'm really just venting my frustration. I'm used to things coming more easily to me.

 thank you for listening.

3. Okay. I've done that.
Now what?

Apparently, I am asking for free lessons in how to build a web page. I'm a fucking idiot.

2. I agree with DS1
The file name of your main page needs to be either index.htm or index.html. Either will work. Upload a file with that name (use an ASCII upload for text files, and an HTML page (a web page) is just a text file). I use notepad to write all my web pages. All you need is a rudimentary text editor. Upload graphics in binary, but html pages in ASCII.

Good luck.

4. Oookay....
I"m looking forward to the day when I can write HTML as easily as I'm keying this text. That part doesn't bother me. That I can learn easily.

But How. Do I. Get the pages. I have already begun to write. To appear. When YOU click. www.katzenengel.org?

I have this control panel, see, with all these icons on it: parked domains. password protect directories. web/ftp stats. subdomains. error pages. MIME types. raw log manager. apache handlers. web mail. ftp manager. IF my host site has some tutuorial on what all these things are, how to use them, etc., I'm missing it.

I am a fucking idiot. What was I doing, thinking I could put up my own site from scratch?!

Which is not to say, thank you, Laelth. (Your name is suspiciously similar to the name of one of the folks at my host....)

16. Maybe you could try this.
I have never seen the index.html trick NOT work, except when the server has set the root directory (as in c:\) on their server to be some other folder. So maybe if you try these two ideas, one of them will work.

Browse to the actual domain www.katzenengel.org and click on file and then upload file. Upload your index.html file and see if it lets you do it that way.

Otherwise, go to your host's web site and click the help button if they have one. There has got to be a way to do this. I'm itching to help you as best I can. I'm no expert on dealing with funky servers, but I love making web pages. I would recommend Netscape Communicator for easy web page making. It's the easiest I have seen yet, unless you are just trying to learn html or cascading style sheets or whatever they use nowadays.

see, it has all these file folders listed, then off to the other side, just one button that says "upload." I have to do more investigating. Thank you, HT

12. Usually there's a folder in your main directory ...
called "http://. If so, put the files in there. The www folder is where the browser looks when it searches www.whatever.com.

At least, that's the way my domain name host has things set up. If not, call customer support. You paid them to help you when you purchased the account.

Good luck. I know it's frustrating. :)

13. Did I pay them to laugh at me?
I can hear it now, muffled voices:

"Hey, pick up line two and listen to this! She bought hosting and had us register her domain and now she's asking *guffaw* she's asking *gasps for breath* she's asking how to put up a web site!"

Sigh, Okay, I'm ready for it. You're right. I paid for it. They should help.

But for now, I'm going to bed. Thanks for your help, Laelth. (LOVE your name. I used to work with a Lael. Irish?)

Yeah, call them. I bet they don't laugh. They help people with a wide variety of internet experience.

And, yeah, the name is just an online handle, but it's definitely Gaelic (scots-irish-welsh). I always liked the sound of it. :)

6. Check the Unix permissions - read access for ALL must be enabled.
Full access for the owner (you), but everyone else should have read-only access.

cpanel - from totalchoicehosting.com as your ISP? :)

10. he suggested I look you up for
graphics. I hesitate to ask directly. I prefer to whine, and then say, "ooh *flutter eyelashes* do you really mean it? i don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies..." :eyes:

Yes. I need help. Backgrounds. Templates. Graphics. Cool stuff. I pay handsomely: many links and kudos and "awesome graphix by" on my site. Which is sure to get billions and billions of hits once Sagan makes it known in the cosmos.
