Kelly Clarkson Cannot Sing (YUK!!)
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 12:32 PM by arwalden
She appeared on Ellen Degeneres' talk show today, and for the life of me, I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

SHE CAN NOT SING. She has a pretty voice, but she cannot sing. Does that make sense?

I DARE Kelly Clarkson to hold a pure and single note for longer than half-a-second.

I double-dog DARE her to even sing directly to the RIGHT NOTE without vocally dancing and leap-frogging all over the place.

What's the deal with this "I-can-warble-all-over-the-place-without-hitting-the-note" style of singing? The vocal acrobatics are NOT impressive. The melodic gymnastics are a DISTRACTION and ANNOYING... definitely NOT something to be admired.

I simply don't get it. Is it possible for ANYONE to sing a tune AS WRITTEN without inventing their OWN tune as they go along?

Just wondering. Rant over.

1. EXXXXACTLY! It is so pathetic to think...
that for lack of exposure to anyone who truly CAN sing, this "idol" is being held up as the measure of a true singing voice.

I never watched any of those American Idol shows, but there was no escaping Clarkson or her current set of contestant/ilck.

However, flipping through channels a couple of nights back I found her on some NBC Christmas special trying to sing Oh Holy Night. More like Oh Holy Horror. I just could not listen. It was truly horrendous (and should have been quite embarrassing for her).

I couldn't agree more about the "affected" pattern of singing.....I guess it is supposed to show emotion, or some sense of blues/jazz sylistic singing? Same reason I find Maria Carey so incredibly disgusting.

2. Oh! And That Thing She Does With Her Hand...
... you know... where she's "plucking" notes out of the air. Kind of like she's being a "music-teacher" and touching an invisible scale in the air--giving the class a visual clue where the current note is.

She's not the only one who does it, but that's annoying too.

Barbra doesn't do it. Judy didn't do it. Karen didn't do it. Cass didn't do it.

5. Oh my...
You are SO right. In fact, most of today's "singers" cannot sing-- they can holler, but true singing seems to be a lost art. Clarkson sang at the lighting of the Rockerfeller Christmas tree the other night and it was absolutely P-A-I-N-F-U-L!!!!!

7. the only thing more annoying than the warble
is the machine effect thing that adds that little touch of "robot voice" to the sound. I tend to tune out these "singers" so as not to have the shit annoyed right out of me, but every once in awhile I still hear one.

BTW, and totally off-topic - the best version of "O Holy Night" EVER was performed by Eric Cartman. "Oh, holy night... when I get presents..." :P

8. Kelly Clarkson is a lip-synching fashion model...
like 99% of all modern "musical" acts today. The creation of actual music has absolutely nothing to do with what they offer, which is all about image and the marketing of product. I, of course, blame MTV for this sad state of affairs, but even MTV is not really MTV anymore.

There is not one popular "musical" act today, of which I am aware, that actually demonstrates their ability to sing or even play their instruments. When was the last time you actually heard a (GASP) rock music harmony? It's pretty sad when I have to pull out a Beach Boys or Beatles CD to remember what that even sounds like. But we don't hear them today because a harmony actually entails that the singers know what notes they're singing and know they are in tune with each other, and why demand that of today's singers when all that's necessary is that they look great in baggy jeans?

And does the "noodling" style of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, really impress anyone? Maybe if they've never listened a Patsy Cline record, or to someone else who can actually go directly from one end of a scale to the other and hit the exact note every time. Now THAT is cool.

Sorry to go off on a rant. I feel like an old fuddy-duddy. But I'm still young and this depresses the hell out of me.

9. Early on... very early on... I think Whitney DID have the range
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 01:36 PM by hlthe2b
But, as with all commercial artists lately, all this artificial sylistic crap entered into her vocals... and then there were the drugs..... Sad, really.

Maria, to me was always just an annoyance... Much ado about very little.

11. I have a more optimistic outlook
There are many good artists out there that seem to be ignored by posters here for some reason, and there are artists that are unfairly blasted just because they are mainstream. This is the type of thing that makes DU a little too elitist IMO, but I respect the opinions. We've already agreed to disagree many times.

As for Kelly, yes, she uses too many vocal acrobatics, but pop is about entertainment - I always found Mariah to be a little more shrill. I could care less about Kelly's music - no positive or negative feelings. I think Clay Aiken is a better singer, but his material still doesn't interest me. I like Reuben so far. Justin Guarini is the worst.

12. Justin Guarini seems to have
...crashed and burned. When the first American Idol came out I almost fell in love with him at first sight, however, as the show progressed I found myself loathing him more and more. I suspect that he has that effect on people. Last I heard, sales of his CD were REALLY low.

16. Yeah, I heard that
I never like him.

There is one Kelly song I really dislike with a passion - "Low" is such a failed bid for rock credibility. Sounds like a bad version of Avril's "Losing Grip."

I don't really blame Kelly for showing off in her field, but I personally enjoy the Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue, and Britney Spears on the new album type of pop entertainment more.

19. If to venture an opinion in opposition to your own or which singles
out some mainstream trends as undesirable makes some of us elitist... so be it. The opposite extreme seems to be to have no opinion, or to share none, or to adopt the opinions force-fed to us (as in a large political sector we all know)...

To each, his own.........

10. I find myself pretty much in agreement with the gist
of the posts on this thread. I think, inter alia, it has something to do with the corporatization of culture, and the "lowest common denominator" factor.

13. Amen to that, arwalden
That warbling vibrato shit is rampant, and not just among pop stars either. All the girls I know who can sing do it too. :grr:

Ladies, excessive vibrato is something opera singers do. Opera is irritating. It's not something to be emulated. Neither is Kelly Clarkson. Emulate real rock stars.

17. Thank you!
This has been something that has irritated me for a very long time. I liked both Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey when they started but then when they started with the stupid vocal gymnastics I got turned off. Can't you just hold a note ONCE??!!! A little bit of it is okay but it seems like most of today's "singers" take it to the extreme. It bugs the hell out of me!
