my dog is dying

at what point do you stop treatment with a pet?My 3 year-old rescue dog has brought incredible joy to my family,gotten my boys through a divorce and their brother being in Iraq.she has what is called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/dogdiseasesh/a/HGEindogs.htm
but her kidneys are failing.I am going to discontinue treatment if she doesn't turn around in the next 6 hours.It's like losing one of my family.

When you can no longer go on, either financially or emotionally.

If it's obvious she's not going to get better (if that's what the vet says) then talk to your family and let them know what's going to happen.

it can be such a hard decision to make - and you want to do what's best for her. If she's in pain or very uncomfortable and the vet doesn't think it will ease or get much better, the kind thing (though the hardest thing) to do would be to have her put to sleep, with you there holding her as she goes.

I'm sorry to hear this. Let us know how she is/what you decide to do.

Believe your vet and spare her a little suffering.

If your animal is suffering don't prolong her pain. It's so hard to let go, but she needs you to make the right decision for her.

I hated to have have to put down our kitty. He could have lasted another month but he didn't seem to have any joy in his little life. In his own way he was telling me it was time.

And it is like losing a family member, because that is just what she is.

It is a very hard time for you I'm sure. Pets so quickly become part of the family and we want to do all in our power to protect them. One of the hardest times is when they are at the end of their journey. You will know what to do and when to do it. In my experience I always knew that the decision was the right one but that doesn't mean it was an easy one.

I will keep both of you in my thoughts.

I wrestled with that decision a few years ago when our Westie got a brain tumor. Even though he was 13 years old, it still seemed too soon. I am fortunate to have a very close family friend who is our vet and also teaches and does consulting for other vets. He guided us through the process of diagnosis procedures and possible outcomes of which non were good. So we just did pain management and when our little dog got to the point of having seizures and not being able to eat, we knew it was time.

I held him when they gave the injection and I'm glad he was warm and cuddled at the end.

Vets will sometimes have a hard time guiding you with the decission of having your pet put down, but if you can find out from them all your options and possible outcomes (best case and worst case), they will feel more comfortable and they will always let you know the costs.

I had a Rottie that had a disease similar to your doggie's. I spent a fortune to try to keep her alive, but at the end I had to let her go. At least, she went in her sleep and didn't suffer.

I'm sure you'll do the best that you can to make her as comfortable as possible. :grouphug:

I had to put my dog to sleep last summer and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. If you feel that your sweet girl is suffering in any way, the right decision is to rid her of her pain. It is not easy and you will miss her terribly, but you will know that you eased her suffering and did what was best for her.

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. She sounds like a very special girl.

I hope you can make her comfortable and make sure she knows she's loved.

We had to do it with an 11 year old cat last year. It's hard, but it's the best for the animal.

I know how much it sucks to lose a beloved pet. Just comfort yourself in knowing that you did all you could to help and that your pet knew that it was loved. :-(
