Don't like a discussion thread? ... Now you can hide it!

Now that Elad is working on DU full time, he's been working on a number of cool upgrades for the forum which should make your DU experience even better. The newest customization function:

Now you can hide any thread!

If a particular discussion thread is driving you nuts, you just have to click this little icon to make it go away forever.

The "hide thread" icon is located to the right of the thread title in the forum listing, like so:

Pretend this is the title of a thread <-- THERE IT IS!

Just click it, and the thread will disappear like magic! And there's even a function which allows you to bring it back later if you accidentally hide the wrong thread. Just click on "Options" and select "Hidden Threads".

You have the power to take control of your own DU experience! Clean out all the junk, and leave the good stuff. It's like having the ability to delete threads yourself!

That comes in handy for those threads that you can't resist the urge to keep opening, kinda like picking a scab. :-) Out of sight, ought of mind.

Is there a way to see if everyone is deleting your threads?

A side effect of this is that I probably won't use "ignore" as much. And that enables me to love EVERYBODY on DU, while I may not love their threads!

If people want this, fine. I'm not going to use it. I like knowing what the REAL DU looks like and not my own filtered version.

I want the whole enchilada, not just the chips and salsa.

I know any thread that made me want to ignore it... would also have to much allure for me to do so. I can never use ignore either... though I'd probably have saved my blood pressure that way :silly:

I just worry that many ""heated posters, who, when facing disagreement will scream at each other to just ignore the thread or hide it, rather than hanging in there and posting a constructive reply.

I guess we shall see...

I have little doubt that that will happen. If necessary, we'll crack down on that behavior. I hope that we don't have to, though.

Saw a new clickable in LBN, thought "Huh? What's THIS?" and was informed it was "hidden." Maybe I'm just a Luddite, but I've NEVER had a problem simply scrolling past a pond I had no interent in jumping into (or for that matter scrolling past posters who tend to raise my blood pressure). But I guess when we're pushing 36K many temperaments must be accommodated... :shrug:

I thought we were all here for open and honest debate. All who register here to read and post are reasonably bright folk with the ability to simply skip over an unwanted discussion.

I fear that this will drive some DU'ers further into their protective cocoons. I see the potential for more harm than good to come of this.

Realizing that many use this forum to simply vent their spleens or to simply "fool around" with politically like-minded folk (as I do for the most part), the offer of such an easy out for "offensive" threads is a boon. For those who crave serious discussion, it is a definite bust. I have often seen some of the most thought provoking thoughts on topics come from those who find the thread distasteful.

Don't like the neighbors? Build a fence. That makes sense Don't like the thread, block it. That makes no sense. If we're mature enough to join and offer opinions, we're mature enough to be exposed to lines of thought that we disagree with - or find offensive and/or repugnant.

Please don't neuter the site.
