1. I've seen that once in 26 years.
3 years in Hawaii. 23 here in Texas. One 13-inch snowfall in the mid-80s. In Texas, not Hawaii. :D

2. Cool! Very nice pictures
Here's one from the Washington Post. We just got a scraping of snow here in Arlington but some enterprising soul managed to make a snowman.

It's hispanic, though - all in Spanish. Not a church I attend, though sometimes must endure their evangelical crusades as they play music and sermons at concert volumes a few times a year. Argh. They're Sunday services, too, I can hear them sing, but that's pretty cool - it's not amplified to the outside, it's just the sound of the congregation singing hymns.

7. Beautiful, Rabrrr
I'm starting out my window at the same snowstorm, very different scene (snow on branches).

Your pictures make me nostalgic for New York (where I lived in my early years after school). I used to love snow in the city.

These out-the-window shots for some reason are giving me a very strong feeling of DU as one great big observing eye all over the country and world.

Anyone else with pictures out your window? I don't know how to post them.

10. It's a Sony DCS something Cybershot
2.1 megapixels, bought it in 2000.

The photos were taken at 1600x1200 resolution, then paintshopped down to 600x450 and compressed into jpg. Good enough for showing on a website. The originals print very nicely, but I wouldn't print the resized ones.

Thanks for the compliment!

9. Very nice pictures.
But probably very cold. I like snow but I never see it (Houston here) but I also don't like being cold. I rather it be hot outside where I can crank the ac down.

But I do wish it would snow (not sleet) every once in a while in Texas.

14. Yes, back in the day when they knew how to building beautiful buildings
It's too bad the buildings have been so ruined by the people who've lived in them for the last 30 years or so, but when this neighborhood was contructed, it was very nice, and the buildings were even more beautiful.

Our building has mosaic tiling on the entry way floors and hallway, and a lot of beautiful modlings on the walls and ceilings. Sadly, they are in great disrepair becuase over the yaers tenants have painted graffiti on them, smashed them through inconsideration, and otherwise screwed up the beauty.

But Harlem is slowly being reclaimed, and buildings are being redone (especially the townhouses are being fixed up - not so much the apartment buildings yet). My landlord has done a good job of keeping the apartments in nice shape as people leave them and he rents to new people, but in terms of the building's hallways and stuff, so far nothing. I'm sure he'll wait five or ten years before fixing them up. No sense spending a lot of money on new mosaic tiling if it's just gonna get smashed by hammers or covered with graffiti.

The trees you see in the picture were just planted maybe 3 years ago, and this year they put little brick walls (two bricks high) around the trees. Those brick walls, all summer, up and down the street, were alwayss being rebuilt because these asshole would walk along and kick on or two bricks out, or break down a whole side of bricks, adn they're doing that not just on this block but in the surrounding areas, as well.

No respect, and it's very sad, because tehse are really beautiful buildings, they're big apartments, and they're also rent stabalized (that is, cheap). I'd think people would be a lot more thankful for what they have, but alas.

16. got any contacts?
I'm living in Inwood/Washington Heights right now, but there's a chance my (cough) "sublease" (the one the super doesn't know about if you catch my drift) might not be able to continue after February, so I'm beginning to need to look around.
Any help appreciated.

but my landlord always advertises in the village voice.

But truthfully, as much as this neighborhood has been improving, it's still a salsa and merengue shithole that will keep you awake at night and give you the shakes sometimes.

23. Hate 'em all
Sick and tired of the damn noise. My neighborhood is also Dominican Republic.

The damn office seekers with their fricking pink floyd level music I just want to throw dynamite at them. And the asshole neighbors who think it's apporpriate to have children's birthdays parties with 120 decibel music until 4 or 5 in the morning.

These people have no respect for the history of this neighborhood, nor the elegance and incredible beauty of the buildings and the neighborhood and geoography they live in.

Seeing people peeing in the street - in broad view - is nothing to me anymore. Nor is watching them litter. Hell, I've watxched guys finish a bottle and throw the bottle in the street, just to watch it break. I've also watched people who are maybe 4 feet from a trash can just drop their trash where they're standing because walking to the trash can would be too much for 'em.

I love my building, and I love my landlord, and I love my apartment. But I can't wait to move out of this hole. Five years of no sleep on the weekends is too much.

22. we have the same problems here in PA
there are tons of beautiful buildings that have fallen into neglectful hands...

One thing that can be said for old construction is that it is durable and eventually if it falls into good hands the buildings will polish up nicely.

I saw a program about home remodeling in Harlem and the houses/townhouses they showcased were stunning and according to the program the real estate was cheap enough to make it quite a worthwhile investment...but then again I am not sure what is "cheap" in NYC.

25. Yeah, lots of home being redone!
The townhouses are almost no longer affordable, since the rebuiding phase kicked in about 4-5 years ago. Used to be able to get one - a nice four story brick townhouse - for 120K (it would be burned out adn/or abandoned, but the shells were intact). Now a burned out one goes for much more, since it's become so popular. Apsrtment rents are also going up quite a bit in harlem. Not for the rent stabalized, of which there are a lot.

I moved into this neighborhood five years ago, and I have seen a HUGE increase in the number of professionals and students who have moved here. Now in the mornings there will be a few other guys in suits and well-dressed professional types in the subway. Used to be, I was about the only one.

Hopefully soon there will be a critical mass of professionals and students, and then the cops will seriously begin to round up and take care of the noisy, trashy, yucky people, and then we can all live in eace and harmony and not be forced to listen to other people stereo's or step over their trash.

29. That ash is from all the burning bodies
of people who made sarcastic remarks and asked silly questions! NYC is a no-prisoner kind of place!

Heh heh. :spank:

Cheers! a :toast: to your sunshine and balmy weather!

When I moved to Hawaii, the year before I arrived the youth group of my church had gone to North Dakota in March. There was snow in MN at the airport where they had a layover, and they actually managed to get a security guy to let them on the roof to play in the snow, since out of the group of 20+, maybe 2 had ever seen or touched snow before.

Hah. And I grew up shoveling the crap every other day for 18 years.
