Hendrix is one bad individual
I'm listening to Jimi right now. "Hey Joe" specifically. I never get over how amazing that guy can play the guitar. Play isn't even the proper word.

3. He used to hide behind a dressing screen
in the studio because he didn't want people to watch him sing. His voice wasn't bad at all. Not a great voice, but was expressive and fit the music well.

2. Word.
One of the greatest guitarists of all time. They should make Jimi, John Lennon, and Jim Morrison the patron saints of rock.

"Saint Jimi". I love it :D

4. I've been working on biographies of famous Washingtonians and
was amazed at the similarities between Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee. Both were minorities who became icons of the 1960s, found stardom in other nations, returned to the U.S. where they became even more famous, then died in foreign nations after taking drugs. Bruce Lee created his own style (or "no style") of martial arts, while Hendrix practically invented a new way of playing guitar. Both are now exploited by corporate whores - Paul Allen built an incredibly ugly museum dedicated to Hendrix, while Bill Gates is sponsoring a Bruce Lee exhibit.

6. Hendrix didn't play the guitar - he commanded it
and the guitar obeyed.

No one controlled a guitar like him and I doubt anyone ever will. There are a hell of a lot of incredible guitarists, but I've never seen anyone for whom the instrument was so much a part of his body while playing. The guitar became a living extension of Hendrix's body and his will and formed a new life form of man/instrument intertwining.

7. these guys came pretty close
& I've seen them in person, so I'm basing it on first hand experience

Jeff Beck
Stevie Ray Vaughan
John McLaughlin (particularly recently with Shakti on acoustic, believe it or not)
Buddy Guy

other greats I've seen don't quite get to the level I think you're talking about -- - Albert Collins, Garcia, Kaukonen, Metheny, Steve Howe

11. Yeah, those guys are good, but they're no Hendrix
In some ways, they might even be better players, but they don't dominate the instrument like Hendrix did.

Not even Zappa had that level of control. Certainly not Jeff Beck who was notorious for his anger when he couldn't get the sound he wanted from a guitar.

Steve Vai has absolute control of the instrument adn is amazing player, but he still works with the instrument.

What I'm trying to get at is that Hendrix just made the guitar do whatever he wanted it to do, and the guitar did it. What an imagination he had.

12. I see what you're getting at.
of course!
from the footage I've seen of Hendrix it is absolutely amazing & he always seemed to be "on".

The reason I said Beck was because I saw him on the Blow By Blow tour in 1975 and it was also quite amazing what he was doing since he wasn't using effects (the cord went straight into the amp) and it was all touch creating the sounds. I'll agree that Beck is not always on, the way Hendrix was; maybe I just caught him on a particularly good night. I can still remember it almost 30 years later.

10. He didn't just play the guitar...
He played the electricity!

Jimi was like no other, then or now. Powerful, powerful stuff.

14. question for people who can play a guitar...
I heard that Hendrix had amazingly large hands. Did this help him play at the level he played at?

Does having larger hands make you a better player - or make it easier to play a guitar?
