Carlos Mancia Is An Unfunny Biggoted Hack Comic
The new trend in comedy is biggotry dressed up as a righteous, rebellious, response to "Political Correctness", and anyone who points out that the comic is not funny or is offensive is quickly dismissed as a PC police. So, a quick way for a comic to stand out is to make fun of people who are struggling or insult an entire race of people.

Making fun of stereotypes can be good humor, if it's done with tact and a feeling of overall good will, but what Mancia does is nothing short of being a complete racist biggot.

1. I've had a big problem with double standards in comedy for years.
I agree with your last line 110%. But the same can also be said about female comics (of any hue) in regard to the way their routines address men.

But Mencia is pretty damn funny, sometimes. I've been watching him for >10 yrs. He did a great bit about the OJ trial (WOW...going waaaay back there...)

5. that was the last straw for me too.
I was trying to see the humor in it all, then the bit about women came...I was done. My family loves him, so I was trying to get him...

3. Damn right he is, Yavin4!
I can't listen to the guy. He's on XM Channel 150 (The Comedy Channel) frequently, and he's about as funny as getting smacked in the face at Camden Yards with the foul ball AND the bat. :eyes:

4. There is nothing genuine about Mencia's humor.
It's just so f'ing angry. He can be funny when he discusses Latino issues, but when he misses the mark he REALLY misses the mark. I recently watched some standup of his and his jokes about disabled folks were just... off, and all it did was leave me with a nauseous feeling.

Dave Chappelle, on the other hand, tackled racial stereotypes with clever and poignant commentary. He is a bright comedian, and the writing on his show was on target. I hope he buttons up another deal with Comedy Central soon.

I also hate Mencia's "Dee Dee Dee" schtick. I think it's uninspired and comically banal.

He's like a Latino Fred Flinstone trying to be Richard Pryor.

23. And even Chappelle thought some of his own stuff went too far.
Imagine what he thinks of Mencia.

9. I used to think he was pretty funny, intermittently...
...and thought of Mind Of Mencia as a poor man's Chappelle's Show. There were flashes of genius. Offensive genius. Often he was just offensive, however, and I quickly got out of the habit of watching.

My recent check found his newest material mostly mean-spirited, though still livened with laugh-at-yourself humor. I suspect that there's also a cultural gap that keeps me from appreciating him fully.

10. I don't think there is a cultural gap.
My father, who immigrated to this country from India in the 70s, also loves the show.

Of course, we do have a similar sense of humor.

7. Thank you.
If I'm going to listen to a comic who can chuckle at himself about Latino issues (and BE funny), I'll take Pablo Francisco any day.

Mencia is an asshole. I cannot stand to listen to his bullshit.

I especially like his Don LaFontaine impression (the man that does voiceovers for every film trailer).

Long time, no see FSC, how's it going? :hi:

13. Hey, Cookays!
How have you been feeling? I've had a very good few months, despite the fact that i have recently experienced some wild excursions of high blood pressure. (The doctors are at a loss as to what's causing it. Had an MRA on Monday, but don't have results yet.)

Still on the meds?

17. Hey Doc!
Feeling great.

Still on the meds, and doing good.

I started my new job in early February, and have been working 12-14 hour days since then. But I've been really enjoying my career again, which I hadn't done since about 1999 or 2000.

Once my heavy duty deadline is up, I'll be around more. But not yet!

16. While we're at it
How come the majority of black comedians I see comment on the number of white people in the audience within the first 5 sentences out of their mouths?

"Man, suuure are a lot of white people here, you see as a black man etc etc"
or
"Man, I sure feel bad for that white couple in the back there"

I don't get it.

25. I think he's really funny
not all the time, but alot of his stuff makes me laugh. He is offensive though, that's pretty much the idea. However, for some people, he's way too much. Sometimes, he says something that irritates me, but usually I have a pretty thick skin. Mencia is on of those guys who sees a line and instead of simply stepping over it, he just barrels over it headfirst. Not for everybody. Nor does being a comedian make someone above being criticized either, so taking him to task is justified too. However, he didn't just pop up overnight, he's been at this for a long time. A good fifteen years or so anyway. So I wouldn't say he's done this as a quick way to stand out, his humor has evolved into what it is over time. He's gotten progressively more brash and wilder over the years. I think part of it is a way of keeping his audience, because he almost has to keep taking it up a notch otherwise he'd be forgotten quickly. That can lead to some pretty dark places though. Pretty evident if you watch his show or hear his stand up that he's gotten to a place now where if he doesn't sound like a complete asshole then nobody gets shocked or laughs. I don't think that's a good place to be in as a comic, artist, musician or whatever.

26. Complaints about bigotry next to a Boondocks avatar?
I stopped reading that shitty comic ages ago after "learning" from Aaron McGruder that all of us white people are bigots, racists and "stupid enough" to jog in the snow. I am tired of assholes like McGruder implying that only whites can be racist, even though racism oozes from that fucking comic. I find it amazing that you think "Boondocks" stereotypes are okay but Mencia's aren't. Is bigotry only okay when it's done against whites?

... and watch and listen to a lot of it.

Good comedy reflects, shines a light on the failings of human beings, which if done properly is funny. I don't like all of Mencia's material, and frankly I'm tired of the Kinison-style screaming delivery schtick, but Mencia is funny sometimes and not others.

On the other hand, many great comics caught a lot of crap for what they said. Play some Bill Hicks, and liberals will laugh and conservatives will fume. Same deal here.

I don't believe in sacred cows and I think Mencia's bits are reflective of what a lot of people really think, and that just makes a lot of the "la ti da" crowd very uncomfortable. Like if someone talks about racial stereotypes, suddenly lots of people are going to start thinking like racists. No, its the other way around.

30. His "Brokeback" send-up with mario Lopez was pretty funny.
But, no, otherwise he's not very comical. He tries too hard to push the envelope, and it comes off as strained and pedestrian.
