New Greyhounds have arrived and are looking for a home...

adoption fees: $140 for greyhounds who have NOT been spayed/neutered

$250 for those greyhounds who ARE spayed/neutered

Do they tend to mistake unknown kitties as something to be chased down and jaw-gripped?

in addition to our Airedale (largest of the terriers) we also have 2 greyhounds, and have fostered 4 others over the past 2 years...

we also have 5 cats. no problem.

most rescue organizations place the dogs into foster homes, they are rarely adopted out right off the truck. they are also "cat tested" prior to going to a foster home because many of the foster homes also have cats.

the fostering time (can be as little as a couple of weeks or a couple of months) give the greyhound a chance to adapt to living in a home, get use to a normal hustle-bustle of a home, and learn about cats, kids and other small animals

the rescue organization I'm involved with has been doing this for over 10 years, and has placed well over 2,000 dogs -- in that time there was only 1 incident where a greyhound hurt a family cat.

They did kill cats that ventured into our backyard, but they left the family cats alone.

My greyhounds were terrified of one family cat in particular named Pookie. One day Cloudy the greyhound was screaming and running for dear life because Pookie was chasing him. Another one of my greyhounds slipped and broke her leg on a wet patch of grass trying to escape the cat.

Pookie wasn't mean, but she wasn't going to take any their crap. The other family cats ignored the dogs. The greyhounds seemed to know that the family cats were off limits to harm.

I don't think that smaller dogs and greyhounds mix well together though. Two of our smaller dogs were accidently trampled by the greyhounds and paralyzed. I think the smaller dogs tried to run with the bigger ones and accidently got underfoot. :(

Greyhounds do make wonderful pets and perhaps when I'm able I will get another one.

BUT....I live on 7 acres in the forest and there is no way I can fence that in. The doggy would be gone the first day. The temprament of the breed would be a good fit for my family. I just don't think I could keep he/she safe out here in the woods.

but the layout of the property and house makes it almost impossible to fence in a backdoor near the house

so up in the back we put up a "sprint track", using pvc pipe as fence posts and zip-tied plastic fencing to it. our greyhounds respect the barrier and have never tried bust through or otherwise escape.

it's 20 ft wide and about 100ft long. We take them there to run and play. If they are to be out unsupervised we have a smaller more conventional kennel area.

otherwise, they are on a leash when we are outside.

How do they really do with cats and kids?

we've fostered 4 other greyhounds over the past 2 years

haven't had a problem with the greyhounds interacting with the cats.

my partner and I both have nieces - current ages 10-8 - no problem when they come for a visit, nor have we seen anything remotely aggressive when we go for walks and kids come up to them.

Cats/kids/small animals: Our organization checks out the greyhounds for "cat safety" prior to being placed in a foster home. Many of our foster homes also have cats, kids and/or other small animals, so the greyhound gets a chance to adapt to living in a home situation and the foster family has time to observe and note any potential problems.

yes, some greyhounds are not good with cats/other small animals/kids - but the same is true for any other breed of dog.

Rainbow's End has been in existence since 1991, placed over 2,000-3,000 greyhounds (I'm still bugging them for a more exact number). In that time there only has been 1 incident where an adopted greyhound has harmed a family cat. NONE have gone after a kid.

Greyhounds are laid back. They are not aggressive at all. If they are "annoyed" - they walk away. The worse they will do is to do a head swing - meaning they swing their heads at you like they are pushing you away.

a reputable rescue organization would have checked all this out prior to placing the dog up for adoption. With our group, the foster family and adopted family meet, and talk about the dog - it's likes, dislikes etc.

Some dogs are returned to our organization - but in 99.9% of the cases it's because the family is moving or divorcing and can't take the dog with them.

We have a great organization for it in Middle Tennessee. I'm always tempted whenever I see them, but haven't given it yet.

I especially like Borzoi for sight hounds.

When we move to a larger place, though.

I know a few people who have one; the head of security in my workplace has 3 and adores them all.

They are the sweetest natured dogs I've ever known.

I've wanted one for a while now, so when I see one I strike up a conversation everytime.

I adopted him 5 months ago, and I absolutely adore him. He's my best friend, and the best dog there is.

I wish all these greyhounds will find happy forever homes.
