My friend was racially harassed at a Walmart!
I can't believe it. I mean, I never thought my little town in suburban MN there were people that blatantly STUPID.

Me and my friend Richie were ringing bells for the Salvation Army. It was fricking cold and our shift was almost over. There had been a man and a woman who walked pass about 15 minutes earlier that had been sorta whispering and pointing at us but I didn't think much of it until they walked out and the woman said to the man loud enough so she knew we could hear, "I wouldn't give any money at all to that chink and his little girlfriend." The man in the woman both looked in their mid-40s.

Can you believe that? I didn't even think stuff like it happened anymore, what is this, the 1950s? At first we were both surprised and then I got kind of upset. (both our parents had gone inside to get us some hot cocoa) I wasn't sure if I would tell my mom. I thought she might get too upset.

I mean, I didn't think I'd see the most enlightened people at a Walmart, but THIS? Its fucking unbelievable.

Man, did that make me mad. I wish those people would shove it, i didn't know anyone could be that ignorant.

God, I'd hope I'd never have to see something like that, really its sickening.

1. Here's another question:
Why is the Salvation Army alowed to ask for money, but Union organizers are arrested if they try to pass out literature?

(Okay, I know the answer. But it still pisses me off.)

22. And, here's another question ........
Why would you & your friend waste your time collecting money for such a homophobic/bigoted organization?

As I've told matcom down there, i really didn't know that, but I'm not a homphobe and it's just sorta a tradition for us anyway.

26. I applaud you for your charitable instincts,
but IMO they could be directed toward a more worthy organization.

Hopefully not again, now that I think of it.

11. I'm from Detroit
Our suburbs are notorious for being a hotbed of racial intolerence.

I know, I've experienced it up close and in person.

From what I've heard it's pretty bad, all the racial animosity there.

So bad, in fact that I had to go down south to find a place where people of different races can get along

6. That's awfully damn annoying
But it's difficult to take insults from WalMart shoppers too seriously. And I"m sure the two of you are far superior to that horrid racist woman anyway.

I hate idiotic racism like that. And it's not like you were begging - you're trying to get money for Salvation Army. Why the hell should they care what race you are?

Anyway, I feel your pain. My partner is Japanese, and we sometimes have problems, too (not so much in NYC, but sometimes; and definitely when we go to Wisconsin or get out in other rural, less educated and more provincial areas).

As with all data, you must look at the source. In this case, the source was likely some half-eduicated idiot shrew racist with a piss-poor little job and a miserable little life. Let her wallow in her hate.

but you can tell by the drivel they spout that indeed they are mutant amoebas.
i hear they are good for keeping your septic tank clean though.
so when people say stupid, shit like that -- you know what they are.

9. "Chink"?
Who in Gawd's name still says "chink"? That'd be almost funny if it wasn't so pathetic. And someone in their mid-forties would be too young to have served in either of the Asian wars, so why the animosity? Lord that's weird (as well as disgusting).

It's pure habit that when I guess a grown-up's age I round DOWN. Very important, acutally, esp. w/ parents and teachers. :)

14. well, a few year ago when i was still in 4-H
We did a lot of charity projects. Me and Richie got called by the old leader to help out so we did. I didn't really know about the homophobe issue, although you're prabably right.

Just for the record, i'm not a homphobe and neither is Richie. :)

19. Well, that really sucks
Wal-Mart though, were the people fat slobs? I was at lunch one day and was looking at the places in the Food Court and checking out the Panda Express where the servers were of Asian descent and this fat lady in her 40s with red hair yelled "Why don't you speak English". I was shocked and looked at her in disbelief. They just ignored her. I thought, what a bitch. Such shame that people have to do this. Let's make one thing clear...the USA is NOT FOR WHITES ONLY! I know you DUers already are hip to this. Sorry you had to go through that, come out to San Francisco area. But the further North you go the more it becomes redneck though.

Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 08:27 PM by lunabush
THis makes me hoping mad. I live in Southern Minnesota, too. I see bits of racism like this, but it still infuriates me to hear about this stuff. Worries me, too. I have an 8 year old daughter, adopted from China. I never want that sweet child to encounter what you and your friend did. I am so sorry.

Friggin' Walmart anyway and the bastards that shope there.
:reallymad:

24. Having been raised in a bigoted family...

...I honestly can't say that your experience surprises me. It is true, however, that since the 1960s, America's bigots are generally a lot less vocal about their prejudices, thankfully.

And I'm sorry you had to have such an ugly experience, particularly during the ostensible season of "Peace on earth, goodwill toward men." Guess those morons who insulted you and your friend thought it was, "Goodwill toward white men."

27. Part of what I find so amazing
about this is that when my husband and I lived in Minneapolis in 1982 and '83 was that we very often saw mixed race couples. Almost always it would be a black man and a white women, and to this day we refer to that combination as a Minnesota couple.

But you still shouldn't be helping out so unenlightened an organization as the Salvation Army. There are other, much better groups to raise money for.

or a chip off the old block, I had something similar happen to me and what can you do? I'm sure a million retorts popped up in your mind but nothing you would say would change her ugly opinions. Sorry it happened to you but I'm even sorrier for her children. Some people are ugly bone deep.
