Poll question: The 34% who support Bush: who are these people?
Polls put Dubya's approval rating as low as 34%. Who are the people in this shrinking group?

24. Oy! My dad too.
I liken it to a religious conviction. He will never, never accept that he is wrong. Facts be damned.

8. My grandpa and my mom's creepy boyfriend
Grandpa is 92. He always votes republican and always will. If he has a real issue against the republican running, he just won't vote. In 1986, he didn't vote in the Michigan governor's race because the GOP candidate was black. My Grandma hates Bush, but her vote was cast for him against her will by Grandpa. She's in a nursing home and he gets her absentee ballots at home and mails them in after voting for her. He's not exactly ashamed of his actions, either. As I said, he is 92.

My mom's creepy boyfriend that is obsessed with my 6 year old niece is a whole different matter. I won't discuss politics with him anymore, the last political discussion we had ended with me asking him "What the fuck do you know about Detroit? You grew up in Holland and lived most of your life in Maryland or Grand Rapids." This was in response to some blatantly racist statements made on his part.

15. Not to turn this into a GD thread, but...
I emailed a friend of mine about this very topic:

Remember we were talking about that core of believers? I think we've been going about it wrong, that there's a "core of 25%" or whatever in that 34%. This graphic below from the Pew Research Center (found it on DU) covers it better.

I think the Kool-Aid Drinkers comprise maybe 60% of the GOP. This includes really brain-dead one-dimensional types who Support Their President no matter what (as long as he's Republican, that is)
- because Rush/Sean tells them to, or
- because they don't want to admit EVER that they picked a loser.

Plus it includes the fundies who support any President as long as he says he's against abortion. Of course, even that group would shrink if Chimpy did something truly immoral in their eyes.

I think the red line would go down IF he gets impeached by the House in 2007, because then some of the brain-dead types would not want to back a loser, AND some of the fundies would jump ship because he's a Lawbreaker. At that point we would bottom out at the true core of 60% or whatever of the GOP.

Me, I'm going with "use their brains as a toilet"

16. My daughter, for one
I'm not sure why - I think it's a combination of influence from her asshole Kansas husband, and a form of rebellion against me. She is NOT stupid nor is she a fundy. She is actually a compassionate, intelligent person who one would think would be firmly progressive politically.

But she's not. She's a firm supporter and I don't get it.

19. Does she believe in WMD's and the like?
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 11:22 AM by kay1864
My fundie s-i-l does. Believes in the "link" between Saddam and 9/11 (despite the 9/11 Commission, even though it was authorized by Chimpy), and that Saddam buried all the WMD's in the sand. And because she listens to FauxNews and Rush and Sean, then it's all true. And there are many, many others, sadly.

Does your daughter hold beliefs like that? Or does the conversation go no farther than "I still support my President"?

(You have my deepest sympathy. And sorry you have to deal with the a-hole son-in-law)

21. Yeah, she does believe all that
She's a Fox news watcher and told me once that she thinks they are "fair and balanced" - I don't think she even realized she was using their own (absurd) words.

Quite honestly, I try to avoid the subject with her because it only leads to argument. And every time, it turns into what a rotten mother she feels I am, which is why I think it has more to do with the way she feels about me than what she may actually feel in her heart. All of which is encouraged, I believe, by the fat, lazy, drunken, Repuke husband. ~sigh~

These people support Bush because they secretly suspect that behind closed doors he beats Pickles, rapes his daughters, and kicks his dog. They talk about how cool it would be to go hunting with Cheney because he's such a badass. Seriously. Genetic flubs.

But those are his core. They'd support the chimp no matter what. Angry at life, angry at civilization passing them by they'll hang on till the bitter end. Then there'll be a push for another one just like him in '08.
