Wal-Mart Hit by 'Brokeback' Protest

Wal-Mart has turned aside a massive letter-writing campaign by the American Family Association urging the retailer to refuse to stock Brokeback Mountain, being distributed by Universal Home Entertainment. The group, which has successfully campaigned against what it considers to be broadcast indecency launched the campaign last week after ads for the film began being displayed prominently in the retailer's 3,900 stores. In an interview with today's (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times, the AFA's Randy Sharp, accused Wal-Mart of helping to push the "gay agenda" by "trying to help normalize homosexuality in society." He added, "But how many copies are they going to have to sell to the losses of customers who they've offended and will no longer shop at Wal-Mart?" But a Wal-Mart spokeswoman replied, "The fact that we are offering the movie is not an endorsement of the content of the movie or any specific belief. ...We simply offer the latest titles that consumers want."

1. Those lost customers will be back
Where else are they going to shop? Have any other major retailers that sell that sort of thing said they will NOT stock the DVD?

2. I'm hoping they all turn away from Wal-mart
those assholes helped create Wal-mart for their lack of standards when it comes to buying cheap, crappily made junk. If they all start walking away because of Brokeback Mountain maybe they could help apply the big hurt.

3. I'm genuinely surprised that they're even selling it.
I never thought I'd hear myself defending Wal-Mart, but good for them.

5. True enough
I'm sure as hell not buying my copy from Wal-Mart...I bought a copy off ebay.

Nevertheless, Wal-Mart is to be commended for selling it. And they'll make enough money off of it.

6. I was kinda hoping the protest by the AFA would put them out of business
I mean, those people are Wal-Mart's prime customers. Although I'm glad Wal-Mart stood up for them, I was kinda thinking that the lost business from AFA customer boycotting them would be just as good too since I can't stand Wal-Mart

I've read articles saying Wal Mart has Target in their sights, and that they're trying to spiff up their image to better compete with Target. I bet that factored heavily in the decision to carry it.

11. The Gay Agenda® was made in Micronesia for cheap wages...
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 05:41 PM by LynneSin
...so that Wal-Mart could sell it to you for a cheaper price than found anywhere else. I mean where else you could you get your oil changed, hair cut, prescriptions filled, groceries for the week, and your Gay Agenda® other than Wal-Mart - a retailer so massive that I have 10 different Wal-Marts within 30 miles where I could get my very own Gay Agenda®
