Kelly has a great quote that she's truly country because she has co-written a song with her current and ex-husband. :D

For that matter, except for songwriting, I haven't heard much from Monte Warden. I saw Monte and the Lone Sharks open for The Mavericks at Gruene. That was a fucking show and a half!

32. If there were even a shred of justice in the music world, she'd
be on the radio every ten minutes, and the talentless women who ARE on the radio these days would be waitresses.

Oh, and Matraca Berg would be famous too, if success were indeed based on talent. You know her?

40. So far, my top two have been posted
Dolly and Loretta.

So, I will try something a little different. Let me say, first, that it is a shame that anyone re-made "Jolene." With that out of the way, I must say that about a year and a half ago, while I was browsing through the cable channels, I came across a video by a girl named Mindy Smith that was the most compelling and wonderful thing that I've seen in "modern country," for some time.

The video is called "Come to Jesus," and, while I am an atheist, this song totally gets me, and the video provides a nice juxtaposition between the theme and the composition. One might be tempted to criticize it in a "Steven Baldwin does kewl Christian skating," kind of way, but I never got that, from this video, which, I believe, was directed by a woman. There's something dark, and heartbreaking about it -- in some ways, I think "Jesus" would have totally dug it.

I should also say that I am not a lesbian, but the woman who sings the song makes me wish I were a lesbian. What's more troubling is that I have a 13-year-old cousin that looks exactly like this woman that I lust after in a totally non-lesbian lesbian way. It's kind of creepy. So, I give you, Mindy Smith:

And you can see the video, which I highly recommend, here:

http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/smith_mindy/artist.jhtml

(scroll down to "Video" ----> "Come to Jesus)

*And, the rest of her album isn't so good, but maybe someday.

It may be a little of a stretch to call her country; she's really more southern-themed folk (and some of her stuff is just straight pop), but she did have several hits on the country charts. She's just a very cool storyteller/songwriter and singer.

73. Yep. And Hollywood did way better by Patsy Cline's memory in "Coal Miner's
Daughter" than they did by Loretta Lynn in "Sweet Dreams." In the latter, Loretta Lynn was barely an afterthought; in the former, the relationship was shown for how much it meant to Lynn. Tsk on H'wood.

72. I wish she hadn't cut her hair though...

Usually I'm preferential to brown or hazel-eyed ladies, but Martina's blues are stunning.

I like her song "Wild Angles" the best; she changes her range several times during the chorus. Nice, and smooth.

I wish she didn't cut her hair. That short bob-like style a lot of these ladies are getting doesn't look that good.

71. Stand by your man!
TAMMY WYNETTE
Stand By Your Man
(Tammy Wynette/Billy Sherrill)

Sometimes its hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times
Doing things that you don't understand

Stand by your man
Give him two arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely
Stand by your man
And tell the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man

But if you love him you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him
Oh be proud of him
Cause after all he's just a man

Stand by your man
Give him two arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely
Stand by your man
And tell the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man

Stand by your man
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man
