And now, a RANT about my supervisor.

I work in the stacks at a university library. I've worked here for about five months. My supervisor (whom I think that I should be supervising) is a man in his fifties. A nice enough fellow but I despise him as a coworker and supervisor. My main problem with him is that he's always trying to give me advice that he thinks will make my job easier when, in fact, the things he suggests will actually allow work to pile up on me and make things more difficult. For example, just today he told me that when it starts to get really busy in the library that I shouldn't bother with reshelving bound journals (which can't be checked out of the library). The problem with bound journals is that since they can't be checked out, patrons pull them constantly to photocopy articles from them. On any given day close to a hundred journals will be pulled from the shelves. That's on an average day. When what's called "crunch time" comes around we can expect the number of journals pulled off the shelves to increase. My supervisor's DUMB idea is to NOT reshelve them, simply put them on a group of empty shelves at one end of the floor that we work on and reshelve them at some later time. The thing is, we have the staff and the TIME to reshelve these things as we go. There is no need to let them pile up to be reshelved at some later time. He is constantly suggesting things like this. What really pisses me of is that he rarely helps us reshelve books so if we were to follow his instructions we'd simply end up with a backlog of work that he would NOT help us do. Even when he does help out he is REALLY slow. Every suggestion he makes is something along the lines of "Oh, just leave that for the student workers" (who often don't show up),or "Oh, just put those books on a cart and leave them down there. We can get to it later." Did I mention that he disappears for HOURS at a time and stands around talking with staff and patrons every chance he gets? He even interrupts me to chat when I working. He does very little work and then turns around and gives me suggestions that will simply increase my workload. Needless to say, I ignore his every suggestion and I manage to get a helluva lot done. I actually enjoy my job. I just get alot more done when this clown is not around. I actually find myself planning to do little projects when I know that he's not going to be here. If he were here he'd try to talk me out of whatever I was doing. I think that he doesn't want me showing him up, which I'm not trying to do but which is easy to do anyway because he does so little.
