I have a question about these people who murder their whole families

After they've murdered the first one, why don't the others run away, or attack the person? I was just listening on the news about that kid who murdered six family members, three by strangulation. I could understand if he was mowing them down with a machine gun, but I don't understand how you can strangle three people in a row without someone taking action.
