People with cell phones and cable internet... any problems w/no land line?

I want to move from Qwest DSL to Comcast cable and nix my phone bill entirely. (I'd rather not nix my cell phone - useful and I'm in a contract...)

What sort of fees are tacked on each month? The base prices on comcast's website don't say this. :)

I think the rate was something like $29.99 for 3 months. it was a special, with unlimited long distance in the States.
We had a "duh" moment because we have TIVO which uses a normal phone line instead of a VOIP phone line which is what Comcast is, so we couldn't get updates.
Anyway, the service when we had it was fine, expcept that one day the internet was down, when the internet is down, so is your phone. I have also heard that sometimes 911 calls can be a bit of a problem.
We just ended up going back to a regular phone service.
We rarely make enough long distance calls to make a huge difference. We also have unlimited long distance on weekends with our cell phones, which we take advantage of.

The TIVO has a USB connection on the back, which will accept an Ethernet to USB adapter. You don't need a phone line.

still have my landline. dunno, just don't feel inclined to get rid of it. i've had the number for about 15 years now.

I just have a cell now.

The only down-side is that I have to go to my neighbour's place to fax anything, and I have to fax stuff quite often.

Our cost is 24.99 per month, and with fees and taxes that coe sout to just a couple of pennies under 29 dollars.

Advantages:

MUCH cheaper than BellSouth -- we paid almost 95 dollars a month for the same service

911 calls are not automaticly sent to the correct place with your address attached. We had someone crash into the fence of our next door neighbor several nights ago and when I called 911 they had to ask me where I was calling from and route the call. If Junior had had Vonage, Tony Soprano would have been dead.

The sound quality is the same, IMO, and installation is a literal breeze. The phone does have to connect to a modem that connects to your network, but if you have a wireless phone system, you can plug one base in next to the modem and the others anywhere you want.

... I really dislike talking to my friends who have Vonage. I hear constant clicking and drop outs... really annoying. However, they claim everything sounds fine on their end.

I live in NYC, and I consolidated phone, cable and internet into one RCN account. I transferred my landline numbers to RCN with no problem. However, I exclusively answer my cell phone these days because incoming landline calls are always telemarketing.

But I've never washed a land line in my pants, so that's something they have going for them. A broken phone won't cost over $200, which is another.

That's my advice.

They totally screwed me last year by quoting me a reasonable price and then charging twice as much. It took me months to resolve, and I ended up having to pay the higher price, minus a $200 settlement (that I only got because I complained to the attorney general's office).
