39. I disagree.
That's fashion talking. It's fashionable to bash Yngwie. I've played guitar for 31 years. I've won many a competition myself. Yngwie, like his style or not, is an amazing musician. Just cause he's an asshole doesn't mean he can't play. Let's be fair.

49. I don't think so
Yngwie is an asshole, but that's not what makes his playing suck. He sucks because there's nothing to him other than technique. Every time I hear him it makes me think I'm listening to some kind of guitar-playing robot. Where's the style and the passion. I don't hear that with Yngwie. All I hear is a guy who has super human speed but no sense of what it really means to PLAY the guitar. I think Muddy Waters said it best.
"There's guys out there that can play 20 notes to my one, but when I play my one they damn well gonna know it's me."

and let's give some props to the great bluesmen, who inspired and influenced many who followed in their footsteps:
for example, the Three Kings: Albert, Freddie and of course, B.B.!

There is no greatest. There is simply no way to account for differences in taste.

I would, however, like to mention the rather astonishing Shawn Lane, who died a couple of months ago. Pick up his - as far as I know - only solo album, and prepare to be amazed (help out his widow). He also recorded with ex-Mclaughlin bassist Jonas Hellborg and ex-Santana drummer Michael Shrieve.

His style is noticeable almost instantly: very graceful, well-planned, highly melodic guitar lines. He wasn't a particularly showy guitarist, but he had a style all his own.

The reason the thread is made up almost entirely of "middle-aged rock-n-rollers," as you say is because they have a body of work, from which to judge them.

That doesn't mean there are not good up and comers... Why not identify some, instead of insulting everyone on the thread?

74. No mention of Phil Keaggy?
Incredible guitarist who gets far too little recognition because he's marginalized as "Christian music". But even the atheists could appreciate the guy's playing.

perhaps not technically proficient, but an incredible texturalist. He really shone on Dolittle and Tromp le Monde.

on edit: sorry, jmow, I have no idea how I ended up posting as a reply to your post, rather than a separate post.

85. I met Al once
Waaaay back in 1984, he came to a local music store, when I was living in Va Beach, as he was doing a promotional "guitar clinic" for Ovation acoustics.

Basically, he showcased some new models by putting on what amounted to a free private show for the 50 or 60 of us who showed up. I got his autograph and tried chatting with him, but I was 16 and had nothing of any substance to say, lol. He was very aloof.

He did have a few brave volunteers come up and improvise with him. I had only been playing a few months, and didn't have the nerve. He was my guitar teacher's favorite, which is how I discovered him.

90. I loved Larry Coryell's album Offering.
Saw his son Julian recently opening for, and then playing with Aimee Mann.
