I can't write for shit.
Seriously.... I'm trying to bang-out a treatment for a screenplay, and seven pages in, it completely blows.

So I'm listening to Black Flag.

2. Before I die.
This isn't a work thing, it's for a side-project I want to pitch for myself.

6. Oh, it's exactly like my writing, then.
At least you're not on a deadline. Sleep on it...ideas come at the weirdest moments. I carry a little notepad with me at all times so I can jot stuff down.

8. That's playing in the opening scene...
Rise Above.

As sung by a 40 year old advertising rep stuck in an immobile morning rush-hour jam.

10. Wrong. Allow yourself a really, really shitty first draft.
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 09:57 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Words of genius from Anne Lamott. Believe it, embrace it, and live by it.

The first priority is simply to get the goddamn thing written, no matter how stupidly shitty it is, then go fix it, which is a hell of a lot easier than trying to write it perfect the first time.

Allow yourself a really, really shitty first draft.

I've been writing that way for years, and believe me, it works wonders.

11. work on your metre
When a poet uses metre subtly, you can't tell,
its really a joy to hear the rhyme ripple and seethe,
coincidence of odd soundings that words spell,
a way for us to conceive, a way for hamlet to grieve.

Then when you're working your next line,
your subconscious rhyming mind will achieve,
a minor rhythmic impulse behind time,
that the stage gets us all to believe.

when you want to emphasize,
speaking words alive,
mixed up metres thrive.

As if one would ever think to ask.

Metre changeups in shakespeare's divine grasp.

18. Then work out a better way of writing, it sounds like the method
you're trying to adhere too isn't your style. Have you tried writing incidents from the middle, planning an overview, writing all sorts of stuff that won't be in it to get a feel for your characters? There are many ways of writing and it sounds like you've not found yours yet.
