Miro was best known for his paintings, and was one of the pioneers of surrealism. He was a rebel in his day, explaining in interviews his contempt for conventional painting methods and subjects by saying he wished to "assassinate them" with his own style. He was one of the first to handle paint roughly, often applying it to canvas with a trowel rather than a brush. Miro's paintings are replete with primary colors and two-dimensional drawings which slightly resemble people and things. His paintings are meant to portray thoughts in the subconscious mind of an adult, much like a child's scribbling might. For that reason many of his paintings include subtle sexual references. Drawing from the experience of his peer, Andre Breton, Miro used starvation, lack of sleep, and drugs while painting to induce hallucinogenic states which brought him closer to his subconscious.
