I'm using a friend's computer and will probably be here most of the evening looking for third-shift work on craigslist. I've got time to kill.

3. Anything at the moment that pays cash...
(just a little IRS joke)

I was in book publishing until layoffs occurred...now I'm looking for moving jobs, etc.

12. You could look into freelance copyediting/proofreading
if you have publishing experience. The investment banks & law firms use temps for this. Pays pretty well. When everyone else is going bankrupt there is plenty of work for the lawyers.

If you need to be off-the-books, best bet is to do work for your friends. Email everybody and let them know you're looking.

20. Easy there, Chief.....
.... I evidently got the wrong translation from the thrust of the topic of your thread and from the post immediately ahead of mine. Somehow I saw humor in them and responded in kind. I can understand that you must be under some stress. Good luck. I will trouble you no more.

9. Sorry to hear about your bad luck
If I was to become homeless, I wouldn't stay in NYC. Too damn cold in the Winter.

I'd get myself a good pair of walking shoes and head to Key West. Plenty of restaurants, tourists to panhandle from, warm temps, and nice soft backyards to sleep in.

Just a thought.

10. Not Key West, it is not a homeless friendly place...
But somewhere warmer for sure. Fast food places are still always looking for help in Florida. They start out at $6 or $7 per hours, which is peanuts, but peanuts are considered reasonable pay here.

13. You scared me for a minute.
I thought you really were about to be on the streets. But if you have friends who let you use their computer, surely they'll let you sleep on their floor if you're desperate. I put up a friend once for four months. It wasn't the easiest time of my life, but I figure the deposit in the Karma bank made it worth it.

14. I've been there
I'll put out some good vibes for ya, Itasca. I wouldn't wish that on a dog. But the main reason for getting out of NYC is the COST. Temp agencies and flipping hamburgers have sometimes kept the dogs from my door, but sound planning for emergencies is important, too. Familiarize yourself with the shelters and kitchens in case worse comes to worst. Some agencies can help with rent or power bills in a pinch, and what with red tape, the sooner you contact them the better. (Keeping in mind that Bush billed over half a million to DHS for his airborne support of the '02 congressional elections, the lousy bastard.)

Good luck to you. I hope you land something good.

15. been there done that..
two words: temp job

Pick up one of those employment pamphlets at your local grocery store...look in the back for the list of temp companies in your area, or just pick up the yellow pages. I got three jobs paying $8-$9) an hour within 2 hours of making the necessary calls...desperate times call for desperate measures.
