photoshop/gimp question
I'm not very experienced with these imaging programs, and I want to do something that should be very simple. What would be the easiest way to make a grid of text? You know those stupid backgrounds that Bush always stands in front of, with a phrase repeating over and over? Like that. I'm sure it should be easy to do. I'd prefer to use the gimp, as I use Linux, but I also have an old version of photoshop around here somewhere. Thanks for any help with this.

1. Cut and paste?
Open your image that you want to repeat. In Photoshop increase the canvas size (pull down menu under "Image"). This will give you more space to repeat the image. Select your image, copy it (under the "Edit" pull down menu), then paste it over and over. You'll have to reposition each image. After you get a few images re-select and copy the multiple images and paste them to speed up the process. Flatten your image to keep the file size small for speed.

Sorry, I'm a Mac artist. Hope this helps.

2. that's what I was afraid of :)
I was hoping there was an automatic way to do it, with a plug-in or something. It's going to be kind of a pain to get everything lined up properly. But thanks for the reply, I apprerciate it.

4. Use the "show grid" and the "snap to grid"
Then it will go real fast. One becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight. It go pretty fast.

7. Snap to Guides
For Gimp:

'Grid of Guides' (for Script-Fu) or 'Guide Grid' (if you have the Perl scripting thing --not my case as I'm running Windows) should work to create arbitrary regular grids. I would assume the 'Snap to Guides' option should be equivalent to the Photoshop 'Snap to Grid' option (but I'm no expert and have never tried this).

6. Define a "pattern" then "fill" the area you want with that pattern.
Select an area (like the text you want repeated, or possibly two or three occurences of it if you want them offset instead of to a strict grid) with the rectangular marquis tool, then choose "edit -> define pattern". Then select another larger area with the marquis tool of your choice, and choose "edit -> fill..." and select "Use -> Pattern" and "mode -> darken" (or another mode if you so choose).
