The guy Cobb beat up had one finger on one hand and two on the other. I forget now if it was a birth defect or the result of an accident.

Interesting to note, too, that apparently the type of verbal abuse the fan laid on Cobb was so common in those days that the day after this incident, the entire Detroit team staged a one-day walkout in protest of Cobb's suspension. In a telegram to American League President Ban Johnson, they said, "If players cannot have protection, we must protect ourselves."

Tigers owner Frank Navin scrambled to put together a ball club of semi-pros and college players, who got the holy hell kicked out of them — something like 22-0. Johnson lifted Cobb's suspension and the Tigers went back to work the following day.

Fun ensued.

at Madison Square Garden (1978/79). There was a best-of-three series, the NHL won the first game and the Soviets beat them twice in a row! :wow:

Many of the same Soviet players were on the team that lost to the USA in Lake Placid. :crazy:

Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, two radio disc jockeys for the Chicago radio station WLUP, devised a promotion that involved people bringing unwanted disco music records to the game in exchange for a 98 cents admission fee. It would prove to be the most ill-conceived promotional idea since the infamous "Ten Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974 <1>.

This promotion apparently encouraged a lot of attendees who were not "typical" baseball fans. Sox TV announcers Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall commented freely on the "strange people" wandering aimlessly in the stands. In Slouching Toward Fargo, Mike Veeck – son of then-White Sox owner Bill Veeck – recalled that the pregame air was heavy with the scent of marijuana. Many spectators, realizing that long-playing (LP) records were shaped remarkably like frisbees, threw their records from the stands during the baseball game.

After the first game, Dahl came out to center field with the records in a box rigged with a bomb, in a mock demolition of disco music. When it was exploded, thousands of fans ran onto the field. Some started their own fires and mini-riots. The bomb also ripped a hole in the outfield grass surface. Bill Veeck and Harry Caray used the public address system to implore the fans to leave the field immediately. Eventually the field was cleared by police in riot gear. In the end, six people reported minor injuries and 39 were arrested for disorderly conduct. Sparky Anderson, manager of the Detroit Tigers, refused to field his team citing safety concerns, which resulted in the forfeiture by the White Sox to the Tigers.

Meanwhile, the Senators received new ownership in 1968 in the form of Bob Short, the Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee. He sought to move the team from Washington. On September 20, 1971, he got his wish, receiving approval from AL owners to move the franchise to Arlington for the 1972 season. Washington fans were outraged, leaving the team's public relations director, Ted Rodgers, with the unenviable task of putting a positive spin on such events as fans unfurling a giant banner that contained Short's name, preceded by a popular four-letter invective. A photo of the banner appeared on the front page of a DC newspaper the following day. Fan enmity was so great that in the team's final game in RFK Stadium on September 30 against the New York Yankees, the Senators were forced to forfeit the game after angry fans stormed the field and damaged much of the stadium and playing surface.

Sure, there's probably been a lot of pitchers that broke their arm. I don't know his name. But I think everybody knows what I'm talking about.

The guy who jumped on him and broke his arm the second time as the Giants celebrated winning the NL in '89 was another pitcher, Ernie Camacho, whom I knew all through junior high and high school.

Marlboro Cup 1978. An obscure choice but Slew was a freak who was always vastly underrated. He nearly died due to virus in early '78. A loss to Affirmed would have relegated Slew historically to a level far below his true ability. I never screamed so loud as when he rolled home 2+ lengths in front, in the exceptional time of 1:45 4/5 for a mile and an eighth despite taken wide off the final turn by Cordero and hardly whipped to the wire.

He was a bargain also from what I can remember. Also quite the stud. Produced many winners.
