2. I couldn't agree more
Never saw the point. They were GenX's equivalent of Blue Cheer.

Of course by now you all know I'm the kind of dork that grooves to Steely Dan and/or King Crimson.

3. I like the Pixies...well, some of their records anyway
Then again, I also appreciate Blue Cheer, so I'm probably not the guy to ask.

6. I run hot and cold on the Pixies.
For a long time, I resented them because they seemed like the "token rock group" that dorky goth techno synth pop assholes liked (as if the whole of rock music was just so gauche except for this one band), but they had a handful of great songs, indifferently performed. And on the whole, Frank Black and the Catholics were a MUCH better band, objectively speaking. (Black's singing improved, his songwriting matured, and he finally had a competent band behind him).

I think Chuck Eddy said it best when he said "The most amusing thing about New Order is that both Debbie Gibson fans and Pixies fans pat themselves on the back for being open-minded enough to like them."

But they're better than Depeche Mode.

10. When I read "dorky goth techno synth pop assholes"
I instantly thought "You mean like Depeche Mode?"

Then I got to the end of your post.

I was a college DJ when the Pixies were in vogue, circa 1989... and I never got the fuss. If it wasn't dorky goth techno synth pop that was the rage, it was all the Byrds-cloning jingly-jangly quasi-folk nasal-retentive wannabes that dominated our playlists. I blame REM for that phenomenon though. But that's a flame war of a different color.

14. Depressing Mode......
The only thing they were good for is making The Smiths cound Peppy....

They sucked in concert....

I saw them with the Sugarcubes... Bjorks original band and PIL.... Johhny Rotten's second project....

It was like listening to mud congeal when DP hit the stage compared to the opening acts....

7. I liked them in the '80's and early '90's. Rarely throw 'Doolittle'
in the player anymore tho. The thing I don't understand is all of the critical praise thrown at them since then.

Overrated, but only because they seem to be rated so high. If they had been forgotten, like so many other great bands of their day, then they would be underrated.

23. The critical praise is heaped upon them...
...because Kurt Cobain once famously said that he never understood how Nirvana became so popular when all they were doing was basically ripping off The Pixies.

So, since Nirvana essentially revitalized and reinvigorated the rock n'roll scene (well, what was left of it) in the early 90s, all the critics started heaping praise on The Pixies and a whole new generation that had never heard of them before started listening to them.

Personally, I think they deserved it. I'm a big fan of their stuff; the mixture of soft and loud/frantic , the blend of English and Spanish lyrics, the guitars, etc. Regardless of my personal opinion, though, the above story is the reason they earned Legend status after they broke up.

8. Talking Heads > Pixies
And before I get flamed for that statement, let me say that I own all Pixies albums and have seen them in concert on their reunion tour.

And now...

9. They made up for the Dü breaking up.
Not that I ever wanted those Hüsker boys to go away - just saying Charles & Kim helped fill a void.

16. "Doolittle" was the only great album, and not a timeless album..
Most of the rest of that band's output was garbage.

18. Pixies = total MEH.
Saw them live because the wife wanted to. I was bored within minutes and this show dragged on for what seemed like two DAYS. Every record store clerk in the audience and their Jetson-T-Shirt-wearing girlfriends knew all the words to their songs. I think $76 could have been spent better elsewhere.
