Has anyone here emigrated from the US? If so, where to? Any tips?

Thanks. :)

You have to score at least 64 on their set of immigration criteria to be considered.

I stumbled across it easily last time. Had to search a bit.

This is the test for skilled workers (and the score is 67, not 64)

Other types of immigration are here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.html

They seemed to want to attract people. There was, however, an expensive application fee which slides as per the points one accumulates in the application process. In my case it was $890.

29. Heck, cheaper than SanFran or NYC
At least it used to be just before they switched to Euros. When Mrs. Kay and I went a few years back, Paris was considerably cheaper than London.

But not sure about the unemployment rate there. It's about 10% for all of France, and 40% (!) for African immigrants in the outskirts of Paris.

48. Found it! I was looking for weather
Only historical data I could find was for Puntarenas (none for San Isidro). For Puntarenas, looks like around 83 degrees year-round. Is it about the same for Dominical?

If I wanted to immigrate, could I get by for several months until I learned Spanish, or would I need to be fluent before I moved there?

58. Depending on where you go, fluency is not necessarily vital.
In our development, there will be enough of us who are fluent that non-Spanish speakers can get along until they become more conversant in the local Spanish.

The weather is perfect.

And since the vast majority will be from the Bay Area, no one cares about the occasional light earthquake.

62. No website, yet..
We are probably a year out, right now.

Costa Rica is not cheap like Mexico. The cost of living is somewhat lower than the US.

We will be selling tracts (we are just now in the early planning stages, but the land is secure with more on option), building some houses and a townhouse/condo development.

We are also building a 50,000 sq ft building to facilitate large purchases of everyday goods.

Also very kid-friendly.

All you need is money (ugh!) and a good attitude.

Ireland is also tempting. Outside of Dublin, it gets quite conservative though. It did have the humor advantage of having American tourists constantly stopping me for directions.

Tourist: Excuse me, but do you know how to get to....?
Me: I've actually only been here two days.
Tourist: Wait, you're an American?
Me: Yeah.
Tourist: You look Irish though.
Me: Irish descent.

At least I know I didn't look like a retarded tourist wandering the streets (something I refuse to do anywhere).

In that preference as my German is better than my Spanish. I lived for three years in Germany as an adult, in Spain four years as a kid, both beautiful countries with wonderful people. Spain had the best weather out of all the countries and places I've ever lived.

78. In the north I will be in Florence, Siena, Orvieto, Assisi, Lucca,
Montepuldiano and Montecianto Terme. We'll fly into Rome and out of Rome but we'll spend an extra day in Rome to visit the Caravaggio paintings (about 15 or so of his best paintings). This is a dream of mine, since I did an independent study of Caravaggio in my Graduate School Degree studies. I am so excited about this!

I tried to see the "Burial of St. Lucy" in Siracusa, on the island of Sicily last December but the Museo Belloma was closed for renovation and the painting had been sent to Florence for restoration. It will be back in 3 years. I plan to take an overnight boat trip from Malta to Siracusa then!

I'll also go to Taormina again! Go there, it is beautiful and terrific!
