27. I don't find it lonely...
though I love the 'quiet'. I work with 'groups' of people- and look for solitude at the end of the day. In a town this size, it's hard to go anywhere and not run into someone you know -and I also have famiy here and am active in local politics. I think it's just a lifestyle that suits me and probably isn't for someone who needs more external stimulation?

In the second photo, of the Golden Gate — that reddish-brownish building at the south approach is Fort Point, where they had coastal artillery batteries during WWII. You go up on top where the gun turrets were, and you look almost straight up at the bridge. Freakin' AWEsome.

71. Yosemite is best in late May because
the waterfalls are at the peak of the snow runoff, and there are few tourists yet. I used to do a yearly pilgrimage then.

Of course, the snow has to be melted in the passes before you can get into the park!

76. You can get into Yosemite year round.
I visit the park every other month (avid hiker, and I live nearby). The roads into the park ONLY close during storms or when avalanche dangers get up there, and I've never in my life seen them closed more than 12 hours.

Tioga Pass does close during the winter, but it's only useful if you're coming in via Nevada or Mammoth. Very few of the parks visitors enter that way even when it IS open.

FWIW, the falls are AWESOME this year. We had a very late, very heavy rainy season and the water is coming off the peaks in huge torrents. It's impossible to stand at the Yosemite Falls viwing area without getting completely soaked right now.

79. My friend skiied in through the Tioga Pass in May
with other ski patrol friends, before they plowed. They had to dig down to get into the huts.

This was some years ago. A week or so later a snow plow driver was killed by an avalanche trying to clear the roads.

We used to ski at Mammoth a lot. The snow pack was so heavy one year that we went up on the Fourth of July to ski, the last day the resort was open. The snow was lousy, but it was the idea of it.
