about something not particularly "cool" borders on the obsessive. The term is not necessarily a broad brush.

I, for example, am a Language Geek and a Monty Python Geek — and damned proud of it.


A nerd, on the other hand, is someone decidedly uncool and not particularly good at anything of value to his/her peers. The term is a broad brush.

(Actually, "geek" originally referred to someone who simply wasn't too bright. It was a common term for carnival workers who had jobs like being the guy who stuck his head through a board or cloth so others could throw baseballs at it.)
