"Paramount's ``Mission: Impossible III'' debuted with $48.025 million, a solid opening yet well below industry expectations and almost $10 million lower than the franchise's previous installment, according to studio estimates Sunday."

1. when your star is a raving nutcase
who alienates large chunks of the population every time he opens his mouth, what can you expect?

and likely a borrowed one. I like MI movies...it is a shame that I will not be wasting my money seeing this one on the big screen...

2. I usually don't care about celebs one way or another, but Cruise
has gotten really, really annoying. That might have something to do with it.

6. Even Dave Letterman tried to help him out of the mess
the interview the other night was very "ho-hum"..how's the baby, show a clip and verfy little more.. I could tell that Dave was chomping at the bit, but probably was told to go easy. Is CBS involved with the production company that put the movie out? I was a bit surprised how "white-gloves" the interview was.. or maybe Dave was just not that interested in him OR his movie

4. I went to a screening of it a few days ago...
otherwise, I wouldn't have paid to see it.

And it was actually a good action movie, certainly the best Mission Impossible movie, I think.

8. I thought about seeing it this weekend...
for about two seconds.

The notion of watching Tom Cruise "act" just spoiled the whole thing.
Where's that new James Bond ? Love the Layer Cake.

9. Went to see it last night
It was a damn good movie, the best MI yet. I could care less if Tom is a nut.

10. My son thinks it was one of the worst movies ever
He got in free because a friend works at the theater. I asked him before they went, "Do you know how the reviews are?" He said, "What does it matter if I'm not paying?"

But when he got home, he said that 20 minutes in, he'd had enough and asked his friends if they wanted to leave. Since they didn't, he went and stood in the lobby for the next hour-and-a-half, occasionally checking the theater to see if things had gotten any better. He said if the weather hadn't turned chilly, he would have walked home.

I'm not sure just what rubbed him so wrong, since he has a pretty high tolerance for movies that are just plain bad. I think it may have been that the movie was 100% Hollywood cliche, without a single original idea to its credit.

In any event, I'm getting the impression that the standard Hollywood action-adventurer is pretty near terminal.
