1. He has said that it's not magic.
He calls it more of a very physical sort of performance art.

Edited on Sun May-07-06 08:26 PM by LoZoccolo
...then he stabs customer in eye with the saber, he sics his cat on performers and they maul them onstage.

But in my country that's considered magic.

9. doesn't do it fo me
His shows typically contain one or two cool tricks, followed by the big release, which is performsnce art. Not to diss preformace art, but magic has a history that makes it his own.

If you want to see a real magician, Criss Angel is wayyyyyyyyyyyy bettter than Blaine. Although Angel likes to throw some preforemance art into his performances.

13. His street magic was phenomenal. His endurance stunts are pathetic.
He started out as the best magician in decades, doing incredible tricks on the streets. His first couple of TV specials are fantastic. Then he veered into the escape/endurance genre and there's nothing interesting, original or entertaining about them. They are just stupid exercises in self-torture.

14. Yeah, that first special is really great
as much because of the reactions of the people he's doing tricks for as for the tricks themselves, which except fot the finale mostly are just basic sleight of hand stuff. His charisma is much more apparent when he's interacting with the public than during the endurance stunts as well.

BTW, I heard someplace that he's a right winger? :wtf: I was a bit dissapointed 'cause he's sexy.

38. His street magic was/is amazing
but he's not above cheating. Of course, all magic is cheating to an extent. The Balcucci levitation effect can be a fantastic illusion, but to use wires as he clearly did in one of his tv specials is just cheating the tv audience. Isn't it enough to show the spectators' reactions without having to show both feet about a foot in the air via a cut shot?

My advice is that he stick to the street magic.

20. I don't think it's magic either
but whatever it's called, I think it's pretty interesting even though they're more like stunts....I guess physical challenges are the right words for it.

I like him though. He doesn't bother me. I hope he succeeds with his special tonight.
Of course, DU is on the hate Blaine band wagon but oh well.

I remember the stunt in London last year. It was...interesting.

I hope he succeeds, also. I don't wish him ill. I think of him as a performance artist. It is edgy, that's for sure.

I couldn't give a monkey's about him, and would just leave him alone to get on with starving himself - or whatever else he decides to do - throwing things is just crass and silly.

23. People in London threw stuff at him, and one even flew a remote-control
helicopter around the box with food such as hamburgers, etc. That was the best part of his whole "stunt" career, is the people of London taunting him and mocking him.

If you don't like it, don't go anywhere near him.
All those haters should try and do what he did.
Yes, it's kind of silly some of his stunts but I bet most people can't do it.

Don't knock it until you try it.

33. MAJOR SPOILER WARNING
WTF was that all about? I wish we could have just watched him do street magic for two hours. Those tricks are amazing.

Even so, I felt kind of sorry for the guy. I always thought his stunts were aided by stagecraft and legerdemain, but this one obviously wasn't. He probably would have made it the whole nine minutes if he didn't add those stupid cuffs and chains to the feat. His drive for spectacular self-promotion got the better of him.

34. He could have been a world-class magician. But because he's an
attention whore, he is doing these asinine stunts in order to make his "name." Hopefully he will just go back to doing magic, which he excels at.

48. I think he is pretty good
He is an illusionist and a pretty good one at that. I think people just like to think they are being rebellious when they jump on the hate bandwagon for people who are famous. It's predictable to see that when someone mentions something that is some form of art because everyone considers themselves to be experts in entertainment. And of course everyone *is* an expert, but only in their tastes.

The David Blaine thing is the same thing. The guy is an illusionist and performer, he obviously doesn't suck at what he does or no one would know who he is. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine, but that doesn't mean that the guy is terrible.
