And the influx of fakes makes them even uglier. I have a real Hermes Birkin bag that i inherited from my great-aunt, a few Prada bags and a Marc Jacobs bag, but I would never get Louis Vuitton. The whole brand just seems trashy to me for some reason.

I've never really understood the attraction to designer bags. I find the same crap in it whether it's Vuitton or K-Mart:

Wallet
Keys
Gum
Hairbrush
Mail
Nail polish
Receipts
Sunscreen
Lipstick
Chapstick
Lint

Do you remember Gucci bags back in the 1980s? That Brown with the tan lettering. Louis Vuitton bags look like cheap Gucci bag knockoffs, only they are exhorbitantly expensive.

they do nothing for me, either.

I, being a good liberal, bought a purse made by students in India to support their orphanage (we have an office here of the non profit that runs them), and lots of things made by the kids were for sale during the fundraising banquet.

18. I do not like Louis Vuitton bags.
When I was in Paris, I went into the Louis Vuitton showroom because my friend wanted to buy a wallet to match her purse. As you walk in the doors, you are hit in the face with the smell of leather. Anyway, my friend paid a small fortune for a wallet. I told her she was out of her mind. Who in their right mind would even want a Louis Vuitton purse or wallet? You are a walking advertisement for the designer.

Having a child around seems to work wonders for that. I add up how many pairs of shoes for her, how many Girl Scout meetings, how many months of tap lessons, etc that one purse would pay for and then I talk myself out of it.

I brood for days after.

my son is 10 - and the cost of all the vid games and accoutrements he wants are staggering. I have recently said, you need to start paying for this stuff yourself with allowance, chores I pay you for and all that good stuff. They need to know that $ doesn't appear out of the sky. I'm very clear with him how much his dad and I have to work for pay for different things and that we have to pay to keep the house, phone, DSL and all that good stuff.

56. I already have that policy in place.
Problem is that right now we are living with my parents (not enough income coming in) and they don't have a similar policy. Most of my income goes to bills and to my parents for letting us stay here. She hears them talking about how easy I have it and just assumes that I must have tons of money to spend.

If we had it that easy we wouldn't be living here!

23. I've never liked it
Mostly it's that they look cheaply made, besides the LV design everywhere. The stitching is haphazard and uneven, and the leather, if you can find it, is of poor quality. Ick.

If I pay good money for something, I want it to be so well-made that it will last me 20 years at least. I'm not paying good money to do your advertising for you and get myself another one in two years.

31. Bingo!
I'd much rather find a handbag at a thrift shop that was well-made than spend a ton of money for the crap that comes out of LV (unless you look at another poster that stated vintage LV-different story entirely).

I've found some fantastically quirky handbags for 0.25 and .50 cents at thrift stores, worn them out once or twice w/ a simple brooch, scarf or even a thrift store lace handkerchief peeking out and have had more compliments than anyone wearing LV.

I think they're very ugly. A couple of women at work have them after saving and scrimping on their retail salaries to buy them and I think they're hideous myself. Certainly not worth the money, no matter how long they last. I prefer my little hemp bag, or my pretty black beaded bag for more formal occasions. Neither of which cost more than $35.

but then so are a lot of 'status symbols'.

People who like Louis Vuitton handbags/luggage are probably also the sort of people who would want to buy a gold Rolex with a diamond-inlaid mother-of-pearl face (which is also ostentatiously tacky to the point of hideousness)...and for the same reasons, to impress other people with the fact that they have a Louis Vuitton bag or a Rolex. As far as I'm concerned, the message those things send is 'I have too much money and no taste or discernment whatever'. (Or 'I bought this from an Asian street vendor on Canal Street in Manhattan for twenty bucks', considering how popular they are for counterfieting.)

53. Pretty much all "fashion" is butt ugly
That's kind of how it works--see how far you can push the butt-ugly envelope and still get people to buy it/fawn over the designer's "genius"

If it wasn't ugly, it wouldn't be disposable. If it wasn't disposable, there wouldn't be any money in it. It's basically a scam, but one of those, like religion or gambling or dieting, that people go along with because they have convinced themselves that it is "fun" or has redeeming qualities.
