Maybe I'm an anime snob. It's Miyazaki and a few series (Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Bebop, Wolf's Rain), and that's it.
Like this stinker:

Good lord. I know it's a kid's show, but it's so horrible it makes me cringe.

1. I'm not an anime fan by any means - I don't get its appeal in any case,
but I hear that what gets wide release in the US is complete dog shit compared to some of the stuff out there.

2. oh yes
Absolutely. The way that our culture sees anime (and in general, all forms of comics/anime/manga) is seen it as being for children; it is only in the past decade or so that manga and anime as a legit art form for adults has become acceptable.

I grew up on Sailor Moon. That shit is classic, yo.

4. Yeah.
I really haven't seen much of any kind of anime so I'm really not one to judge, though.

3. I know what
you mean. I gave up trying to find good anime, cause if you buy it outright, or rent it, at least in my case, you end up coming up 90% of the time, with a crap movie....albiet, the artwork looks great, story, and everythign else is garbage...

I like Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Ghost in a Shell, Ninja Scroll, Tekken, and Princess Monokoe....

6. Yeah, the shows made for kids are usually formulaic crap
But a lot of the stuff geared toward older audiences is well done and thought provoking- Serial Experiments: lain is my favorite example.

8. another good one

You really should check out "Neon Genesis Evangelion" -- it truly is the best anime series, bar none. It's not even a debatable subject for me.

10. Anime hasn't progressed much since Speed Racer
More violent, repulsive, and inscrutable, sure. But it still has lame animation and characters with big eyes like you see in those black-velvet paintings of Mexican kids.

11. The only two series I've taken an interest in
Have been "Big O" and "Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi," the former for the style, the latter because I found it funny.

12. For me
it's not the subject matter, or who it's aimed towards. It's the animation and art style I can't stand.

22. Actually, I've never seen it, but there was this guy on my Quizbowl team..
who would start talking about this sub-genre of Anime every time we went on a trip to play somewhere far away. About 80 miles into the trip, you could count on good old Jason to deliver a fine lecture on the topic

23. I don't go for the killer space robots or the chirpy little girls with big
eyes genres, but I've seen some good anime, too.
