Other Than Carly Simon's "Anticipation" -- Can You Name A Pop-Song ...
... that's been used in a TV commercial? Name the song and the product. So many to choose from... this should be easy.

Here's another one to get you started: Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" was used in a Levi's commercial (the one with the pair of jeans that were "possessed" with a mind of their own after some guy swiped them off of a balcony ledge).

I know the Beatles 'Revolution' was used for something.
The only one that I canplace the product with is Janet Joplin's "Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz" That was done for Mecedes.

15. That one pissed me off the most...
That Hilfiger ad chopped up the lyrics to make it sound like a flag-waving patriot song, not the anti-war screed that it is.

It was soon after 9/11, and they just used the lines...

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue.

And they cut out the rest of the song. I thought I was going to have an anyeurism when I saw that ad. John Fogarty had/has absolutely no control over his songs and how they are used, poor bastard doesn't own any of them.

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief",
oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, why don't they help themselves? oh.
But when the taxman come to the door,
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Yeh, some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give,
oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no military son, SON, NO
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, NO NO

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate son, son son son

20. Nearly any duet with Marvin Gaye:

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Tammi Terrell
"You're All I Need" with Tammi Terrell
"It Takes Two" with Kim Weston
"Nothing Like the Real Thing" with Tammi Terrell
"Your Precious Love" with Tammi Terrell
"If This World Were Mine" with Tammi Terrell

I've only heard "Your Precious Love" and "If This World Were Mine" used in a couple of commercials, but the rest have been used way too many times.

Also, a lot of his other songs are used ad nauseum:

"Let's Get It On"
"Sexual Healing"
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
"What's Going On?"

I'm sure there's many others I'm missing.

What killed me were: Nick Drake's Pink Moon for a car ad (maybe that was a VW too) I think they also used a classic punk song - Dead Milkmen?, can't think of the song offhand. That was a shocker.

and a Ramones song for Verizon!!! :grr: I guess Johnny (heirs?) needed dough, I can't see Joey wanting or having permitted it.

57. Amen to that.
I've always enjoyed the complexity (structurally) of Kansas' stuff...mixed meters and such. Tight pieces, and really good musicianship. Went through quite a period on them, as a supplement to my more "regular" rockers.

Thanks, all, for all of these citations...neat to see this covered in a thread.

May I also add the recent use of "Ooh Child," as used on TV ads for some networking firm.

59. Yes. Some car company or other -- VW sounds right. His parents
allowed the advertisers to use the song to hawk cars but denied a documentary direcotr permission to include Drake's music in a film soundtrack.

I don't think Nick Drake's parents have quite the artistic instinct their son did.

58. More baby boomer blasts from the past...
When I was growing up, commercials often used selections from classical music and Broadway musicals to sell products. Gold Medal flour used Frank Loesser's "Fugue for Tin Horns" (from Guys and Dolls), and some floor cleaner ad used "Kids" from Bye-Bye Birdie.

Classical music is still trotted out for commercials, though (e.g., the duet from Lakme for British Airways).

But what really annoys me is hearing "I Melt with You" used for some hamburger comercial (Burger King, possibly). And I already hated cell phones when Cingular or some similar company used "The Weight" for its crappy commercial.

And don't get me started on "Woo-Hoo" in the Vonage commercial. :puke:
