Where is Mr. Rogers when we need him?
I just caught some footage of Mr. Rogers in a senate hearing from 1969. He MELTED the senator from Rhode Island, Mr. Pastore. Mr. Rogers always made me feel good about myself. These days, who does? So what if the show was hokey or full of oversimplified platitudes? Did my generation learn anything from this man about how to treat people? That footage was only about 5 minutes long, but he had more wisdom for kids than I have heard in a long time. I'd bet the man could melt Cheney's grinchy heart.

2. Fred was a great guy.
The Class of 1992 of the college I toiled for at the time chose Fred as their commencement speaker...I was the staff liaison to Fred. He was great. It was an incredible 36 hours in his presence.

4. Our commencement speaker was the pres of the college
He used the same crappy speech over and again. It was a string of empty rhetoric. "Marketplace of values." I guess this meant comparing gay people to people with green hair (after all both groups are freaks and choose to be that way) and saying that if the school's non-discrimination policy was changed to include sexual orientation, then the "orientals" would want included. Give me MR. Rogers any day.

8. He's still around
In times of difficulty, all we have to do is ask ourselves, "What would Mr Rogers do?"

12. He had great faith in children.
While everyone else was hyping it up, screaming, trying to be rollicking funny and assuming that children have 10-second attention spans, he trusted that children would be receptive to a calm voice that took the time to talk about and explain things ranging from engines to feelings.

His shows were the best.
