on the back of a freaking iPod?!

My eyes are 43 years old! My glasses don't work that well! I don't have a magnifying glass!

1. They just want you to buy a new one...
when the old one is lost, stolen, or falls innocently into the toilet... :D

2. I had the same problem, and I'm way older than you.
The serial number is really hard to read on that shiny surface. I held it at an angle under a bright light and squinted; finally got it. Maybe Apple doesn't think anybody older than 25 would buy an iPod.

13. no problem, I once threw an iPod against a wall
so I can sympathize. I suggest wiping the whole thing and starting over. you can do that with the iPod utilities. it's worth a try.

17. what computer are you running?
XP? OSX?

and when you plug it into the machine, what does the screen on the iPod do? is it charging?

18. XP.
First, it said "do not disconnect," which I expected.

Then, the menu came up, and I got the "Kim's iPod not recognized" or whatever it said. At the same time, iTunes STARTED its "iPod updating - do not disconnect"

Now, iTunes is in the state where there's no iPod showing up at all, and the iPod itself says "charging."

If you know anything, your advice is welcome and I will check it out tomorrow. I'm way past bedtime here. Thanks, NZ.

'night, all.

sleep on it. shut the whole bloody thing down, and reboot it, see if that recognizes the ipod.

sorry for the mess...

20. You might have to reset it. Here's how:
First, plug it into an external power source. Then toggle the Hold switch on and back off. Then, press and hold the Select and Menu buttons *together* for at least 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. It will probably work after this (it did for me, anyhow, when I had a similar problem). The iPod manual is here; reset instructions on p.60: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPod_User_Guide_(color_display).pdf

Hope this works.

21. I have a strong love-hate relationship with my iPod as well.
Right now we're on good terms. Last week, however, we were breaking up. I sent it away and received it back from Apple all better. Who knows what the hell they did.

22. How About Reading it off The iPod Screen?
About This iPod should give you the serial number (it does on my mini).

I can also get it by syncing to my Mac, but it's a Mac.
