Two twenty-something guys just made my night!
:P No, it's not quite what you think.... :) I'm at a professional conference at a well-known East Coast beach (leaving tomorrow :( ), and I'm staying at a hotel near the conference hotel. Everything here is oceanfront, and there are a lot of surfer guys around here. I had gone back to my room to drop off a bunch of stuff before dinner, so I walked to my hotel. On the walk back, two surfer guys riding bikes (with boards and wetsuits and everything) who could not have been much over the legal drinking age passed me and did a double-take! They whistled and one of them yelled, "I love you!" I smiled and waved and said, "Thanks!" :) (I have to admit that I looked very nice.)

Mind you, I'm not fond of construction workers/highway workers/whoever whistling and making kissing noises (that's really gross!), but when you're 43 and twenty-something guys think you're attractive, it's a real ego boost. :) Those guys probably don't know that they made my day!

Just had to share. I'm really not bragging or anything, but....:woohoo:

I got called "ma'am" today by a sweet young man with big brown eyes and a terrific smile.

*sigh*

4. It's happened to me a lot...
The first time was when I was about 29 or 30. Strangely enough, I got a lot of "ma'am"s in my 30s. I don't seem to get them nearly as often since I turned 40. I don't know what it is, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth! :)

83. Does Ma'am really offend you?
My dad taught me to call every woman whose sir name I don't know "Ma'am", and every man whose sir name I don't know "sir".
I am now nearing 40, but I still call adult women "Ma'am" and Adult men "Sir". I just called the cashier at the coffee shop "Ma'am" and she could not have been more than 22. I never thought it could offend someone. I view it as a term of societal politeness. Thinking of it as an offensive term is new for me.

carry his surfboard while riding his bike. That was the first image that popped into my head when I read your post.

I left Virginia Beach 15 years ago. I understand that the place has changed a lot since I lived there.

33. Atlantic Ave. reminds me of Myrtle Beach, but much nicer
It's cleaner and not as run-down as MB. It's also gotten very, very busy. The traffic was bad at times, and there are a lot of people there now!

One day, as I was walking to my office, a young man was coming in the opposite direction.

As we passed each other, he leaned over and quietly said "Nice legs!" --- and kept on going.

I was 42 at the time.

19. NewWaveChick, something like that happened to me the other
day! I've been going through a tough time lately and have been walking to try to keep my mind off of my troubles. Anyway, I usually walk around my neighborhood and garner the attention of nobody at all. But on Sunday I went a-walking and passed by a garage where there were a bunch of young guys hanging out. I didn't look at them because well, I'm 42 and why should I? Suddenly I heard a horn beeping and looked over involuntarily. One of the guys was leaning into a truck and pounding the horn. When he caught my eye, the bunch of them started waving and smiling at me. I have to say, it made my day!

I haven't had anyone do double takes in a long time. :-(

I'm not ugly, but the MS diagnosis the last year has plumped me up quite a bit. It's hard to exercise without the legs turning to jelly, and the new job has given me no free time the last 3 months. Stress has also upped the chocolate factor that I need to get me through.

You are so lucky! :woohoo:

And anyone with "New Wave" and "1981" in their name has to be cool!

Then, when my hair grows out some more, another spiral perm, which is always my best look. (Unfortunately, those of us with straight-as-a-board hair have to improvise!)

Leaving Sunday afternoon.

This cousin and I have been e-mailing for about 6 years now and are finally getting to meet. I wish I had time for more, but it's going to be an exhausting time anyway since I'm still recuping from threee months of hell at work!

Next time I get to town, I promise I'll make time!

the university I attended! LOL :) There were some preppies who still wore pink and green clothing and add-a-beads, but they were in the minority. (Future freakin' neocon preppies!!! :grr: )

Our dorm group (four dorms) had Springfest each year, and lots of great local bands played. The dBs came my freshman year, as did Let's Active. (*Sigh* Those were the days...) One of the minor bands was The Dead Baggers, and all of the songs were funny anti-frat New Wave stuff... :D

Even saw Oingo Boingo at a street festival in the city where my boyfriend (now ex-bf) lived at the time! Other concerts that I went to (can't remember all of them, but here goes): Human Sexual Response, The B-52s, Psychedelic Furs (saw them four times in the early 80s!), BowWowWow, Adam and the Ants, REM (early days when they played hole-in-the-wall clubs), The Clash, English Beat, Wall of Voodoo, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, ... There are more, but my 43-year-old brain can't think of them right now! :) I got into all of those concerts/shows for $5 or less with my student ID. :D

Edited to add: How could I forget U-2? They put on a good concert in 1982!

Smithereens (met and auto.) Peter Murphy, PIL, Psychedelic Furs...

Heck, I'd catcall you if you wouldn't think of me as a dirty old man.

51. I know the feeling. A couple of early 20 somethings

At best buy were very smitten with me a few weeks back -

I am 35, so I was flattered.

Kind of funny. Very inexperienced lines.

Just loved my perfume!

58. Very cool!
Did they stutter and stammer too? I was with a friend out shopping a few years ago, and one of the clerks was obviously smitten with her. He couldn't have been more than 18, and he fell over himself trying to help her. He also kept getting very close to her and "gazing into her eyes". She laughed about that for days, but she also got a big ego boost from it! :)

73. another 40 something old schooler here
and I am always amazed when the clerks in the BB music section start gasping for breath when I tell them about seeing the Ramones and other punk and new wave bands. Wonder if they hire em, them train em to fawn over we middle-aged rockers? ;) It makes me laugh and not feel quite so ancient.

I do think there is some quality that women of our age have that is very attractive. I don't know what it is. Maybe just being very comfortable in one's skin.

:hi:

75. Maybe so. Whoever said that 40 is the new 30 was onto something...
Edited on Thu May-11-06 01:00 PM by NewWaveChick1981
At this stage in my life, I have figured out who I am, what I do and do not like, and what I need and want. I'm sure of myself, which I wasn't at 20 or even 30. :) And 40 isn't what it was when I was growing up---40 meant "over the hill", which isn't the case at all now.

Edited to add: You know, it's funny...my sister started selling her old concert T-shirts on eBay. (You know, the ones she got actually seeing the artists in concert.) Well, she's sold the hell out of hers, especially the Springsteen and Police ones, and the more tattered and worn, the better. Know who she's selling them to? Teens and twenty-somethings that want to show off to others (like they've actually been there!). She's made a bundle on T-shirts she thought were dustrags. :)

Guess the new generation is jealous of us! :D

78. Women 35 & up ROCK

We have been around the block. We are secure in ourselves. We are a force to be reckoned with....

THAT is the real reason many older men go for the jail bait. Many of us are beautiful and sexy, and we have it all over the younger women who haven't grown into themselves (hell, we EARNED it). These guys are too insecure to handle a strong woman!

77. It was cute, and funny at the same time!

One was thinking he was all smooth (NOT SMOOTH AT ALL).

The other kind of stuttered over himself.

I was wearing my red halter 50s bombshell dress.

Gets em everytime!

71. These days, no.
:) In my younger days, I had to walk by a construction site every day on my way to class at the university I attended. There were construction workers, young and older, who made kissing noises and whistled as any woman (me included) walked by. That was just annoying, because it happened all the time and it was indiscriminate. But if there were a guy on the street who whistled or made a comment, I didn't mind it. I'm still the same way. If Mr. Beer Gut wants to whistle, I'll wave back at him, just like I would the younger surfers. However, that doesn't mean I want to pick up ANY of them. :) It's just nice to get that kind of attention every now and then.
