Anyone ever get rid of squirrels in your attic?
About a week ago I heard something running around up in the attic and yesterday I saw where they tore down a section of my "soffit". I saw three, but I am pretty sure there are more.

I have to get the fuckers out and seal up as much as I can, but I thought I would ask here if anyone ever had to do this and what they used. I have read a bit about it and so far I see that moth balls will not work, fox piss will help, one person said to play a small radio up there (suggested talk radio), and if I catch them in a cage I should take them at least 5 miles from my house.
Thanks.

1. Dousing your attic with fox piss will do the trick.
Or, you could just use Budweiser.

I wouldn't mind the crunching of squirrel bones at this point, but bird bones would bum me out too much.

6. When I was young and reckless . . .
I used a high powered pellet pistol to rid the attic of squirrels. It was fairly easy becuase they got curious when I opened the little door to the attic in the upstairs bedroom closet, and they came nearer to me. It was almost like shooting fish in a barrel, though it usually took an extra shot to the head to finish them off with that gun.

Today, I would seek a less cruel method.

When I first saw the damage they have already made. But I think I will have ot look into other possibilities right now so I don't feel guilty.

it's like Fox piss in a crystal form I believe. She also used peppermint oil on cotton balls to rid her attic of the rat bastards.

Something to look into. :-)

24. First, yes I am still on meds (smarty pants!)
Second, there is a show on This American Life called "First Day" which aired 11/13/98 and it has a story of a cop who tries to get rid of a squirrel from a couple's attic - it goes horribly wrong but it's a damn funny story!

If interested in listening to it, go to www.thislife.org and then to their archives of shows - you can find it by its air date. Also, you can just listen to the second act ("Squirrel Cop") which is about 20 minutes into the show. From their description:
"Act Two. Squirrel Cop. The first day inevitably means mistakes, mishaps, fiascos. A true story, told by a former rookie cop. (14 minutes)"

Off topic: I'm a huge fan of This American Life and my very favorite show is called "Lost in America" - it's hilariously funny plus I was there in the audience for their live taping in D.C. (that was, in fact, taped the day I had my "official" first date with EP.) :) Its air date can be found under 6/6/03. Funny as hell!!

18. Actually moth balls DID work for us...
I too read that they didn't--but it was on a pest control website that wanted to sell me traps. So I tried a few moth balls near all their holes. Worked like a charm, they've been gone for months.

20. Yep.
2 or 3 moth balls per hole (on the floor, not in the hole itself) should do it. Certainly worth a try--heck, it's only about $4 for the box.

Then store the box in the garage or shed, wrapped in double or triple shopping bags. Or just toss the box. Me, I can't stand the smell. You don't want to store the box in the house. Pyew.

26. Do you have cats?
I have a problem with rats getting into my attic in the winter. After being embarrassed by an exterminator who showed up in front of my house in a van with a HUGE plastic rat on top, I decided to try something else. The next time it happened, I let my two cats go into the attic and the problem disappeared that evening. I doubt the two cats killed the rat. I think they just harassed it enough to know that there must be a easier place to nest. If I had squirrels up there, I'd let the cats go up there to see if they convince the squirrels to relocate.

34. Both
Mostly the squirrels I think.

I'm pretty sure it was their extended family that pelted us with acorns every time we got out of the car a few years later.

Seriously, everything would be normal. We'd get out of the car, and suddenly WHAMO, acorns flying, little furry brown creatures screaming orders to the troops as we mad-dashed to the house.

38. We did.
We actually soaked cotton balls in spearmint oil, which drove them out, and then put wire mesh (two different grades--one for squirrels and one for wasps) over the holes.

They spent years trying to dig their way back in!

Actually, I really don't hate squirrels as much as I hate mice and rats. At least squirrels play a useful role in the ecosystem, which is something I've never been able to determine about mice and rats. Nevertheless, I would not want to share my house with a squirrel.

46. Yes.
We were fortunate because by repairing their entry points and attaching chicken wire over it to convince the little nutcases that it wasn't a good home, they left and haven't been back. I have used a havahart trap to get rid of a ground squirrel, and they work well. Fox urine didn't bother the ground squirrel.

51. we had this problem too and the little monsters were damn loud
Then one of our cats grew up and learned to catch and kill them. Then he learned how to get up ON the roof. Interestingly enough this winter we did not have squirrels in the attic.

They will come out when the weather gets warm which is the time to put out the mothballs, spearmint oil, etc and bolt the place down with ammo plate to keep them out. Bastards chewed throuh our soffit.

They hate CatZilla though.
