Al Swearengen may be riding off into the effin' sunset a little sooner than expected.

HBO has confirmed that it will not pick up the contract options for Deadwood cast members, indicating that the upcoming third season of the cuss-happy western may be its last.

According to Variety, the ensemble's contracts will expire on June 11, the date of the third-season premiere, and while technically this makes any cancellation news premature, the chances of the show being resuscitated at this point are unlikely.

2. If it weren't for the Sopranos and Bill Maher right now, HBO would be
dead to me.

I'm still pissed about them cancelling Carnivale. Sons a bitches......

3. How can they cancel a show with such great profane dialogue?
Cocksucker! cocksuckers!
Al, to Wu: "I sure am glad I taught you that word."

EB Farnum: "Be brief."

Calamity Jane: "Be Fucked!"

EB Farnum: "Her gutter mouth, and the widow in an opium stupor. A conversation for the ages.”

and my favorite chunk of Swearingen philosopy:

Al - “In life you have to do a lot of things you don't fucking want to do. Many times, that's what the fuck life is... one vile fucking task after another.”

others:

Ellsworth:"I may have fucked my life up flatter than hammered shit, but I stand here before you today beholden to no human cocksucker."

Seth: What kind of man have I become, Sol?
Sol: I don't know. The night ain't fucking over.

7. I am waiting with bated (sp?) breath for the release of
Deadwood Season 2 on DVD come May 23.

This is the single best show I have seen. David Milch is a genius.
I do not have HBO but am dreaming of watching the second season in
two or three our clips.

I am an 'old west' fan. But what is being done on the first season
is too strong.

My favorite Al Swear Engine lines was his comments on the
"deep thinkers in Washington"

I love that phrase.

13. Plus, he's one of us
the actor that is. A blazing liberal. Ian McShane was on Maher's show and knew more about our government than all the freepers combined.

11. Love that fuckin' show.
I HAVE to watch reruns repeatedly because every time I watch I catch some phrase or bit of information I missed. The dialog is fantastic. I have not been this interested in a TV show since Homicide.

HBO riding surf wave
Nunn's 'surf noir' comes to smallscreen
By DENISE MARTIN, MICHAEL FLEMING
HBO and David Milch

..(HBO)execs are in discussions with Milch to pick up a one-hour pilot set in the world of surfing that Milch would write and exec produce. Nunn would co-write and co-exec produce.

In the same way Milch's dark take on "Deadwood" is atypical of the Western genre, his untitled surfing project is said to take a more somber approach to its subject.

Writing partner Nunn is best known for having pioneered the "surf noir" -- part surfer tall tale, part murder mystery -- made famous in his novels "Tapping the Source" (an American Book Award nominee), "The Dogs of Winter" and "Tijuana Straits." HBO project, however, will be an original work.

~snip~

Milch is in the middle of a two-year production pact with HBO, under which he is continuing to work on "Deadwood" while developing new projects for the cabler.
