Jewish and/or Arab DUers: A question for you.
No, it doesn't have anything to do with Peace In The Middle East.

I went to see a doctor last week whose name is Moishe Hasbani. To me, that sounds like a Hebrew first name, and an Arab last name.

1) Am I correct in this assumption?

2) If so, is it unusual to find someone with this ethnic conflation of names, or not?

Thanks in advance for any information. The ethnic origin of names is kind of a hobby of mine, and I'd appreciate any information you may have.

1. Hi Redstone.

I'm not answering with any authority but the Hasbani River runs through Israel or along its border with Lebanon. The surname may be associated with the geographic reference somewhere in the wayback machine and may be Israeli (as opposed to other Jewish origin.)

Name origins are a bit of a hobby for me too.

2. Hey, thanks.
That may very well be the explanation.

5. Yes, the Sephardic Jews are those who lived around the
Mediterranean area and in the Middle East, as opposed to the Ashkenazaic Jews who lived in northern and eastern Europe.

In addition, some immigrants to Israel shed their old names and adopted Hebrew names.

4. Moishe is Hebrew
its my Hebrew name. Hasbani does sound Arab. I'm not sure if it is also Hebrew. I'd say he is Jewish though.

6. The Arabic form of "Moses" is "Musa"
so he's probably not Arab.
