What is up with plus size clothing?
Edited on Sat May-13-06 09:25 PM by GirlinContempt
I went out with my Mum today, and she was looking for some shirts. So, browsing through the 14/1x racks, pretty well ALL the shirts are these shapeless sacks. It was awful. We found her a nice long linen jacket, but not a single shirt.

They were all these thin cotton/linen box cut shirts that hang down really far with wide 3/4 length sleeves. Put it on and you look 50 pounds heavier.

Tunic. Thats the word I was looking for. Anyway, what the hell is up with that? Last I noticed designers were starting to pay attention to making flattering, nicer clothes for larger people.

1. Cutting for plus sizes is an art
and one not all designers have mastered. It's not misses' sizes scaled up, it's a whole different ball game--shaping, proportions, colors, fabrics.

2. That's a good question!

Why do many of the manufacturers of Plus size clothing
forfeit style and variety when they make large size clothing?

The few exceptions I've seen are very pricey.

3. Old navy has some very nice fitted shirts...
And while Lane Bryant is a little pricy on some stuff, they have some really nice stuff. Stay away from the Avenue. I had a shirt I washed once that FELL APART.

12. It's totally ridiculous. Go into Lane Bryant or any other
plus size store and half the clothes (halter tops, micro mini skirts) would look absolutely terrible on larger women. I'm all for being proud of who you are and wanting to feel good about yourself no matter what your size, but sometimes I see really large women wearing things that just look awful. The other half of the clothes in the plus size stores are hideous and shapeless.

But then I see fashionable clothes on women that *would* look fine on larger women but plus size clothiers aren't carrying them. It makes no sense to me.

13. They are no better than the other fashion stuff in misses sizes
It's a PITA to find professional looking classic clothes. I don't like "fashion - what's in style" I like shells, tailored blouses and dress slacks and suits.

Anyway, what I have found success with, and granted these are mid to higher end stores. But what I've bought from these stores meet my basic needs for classic looks I can wear for years.

Macy's: Liz Claiborne career slacks, Jones New York, some Ralph Lauren and Charter Club
Land's End: dress and casual clothing
Talbot's Woman: sweaters, blouses, shirts, slacks
Coldwater Creek: sometime good buys on everything.
Nordstrom (Encore): Caslon, Foxcroft shirts, and Eileen Fisher (admire but haven't bought yet)

15. QVC..com has some really nice plus-sized clothes.
I also watch when they show the fashions on TV. And just about all of the clothing is in regular and plus sizes.
