Do you take music for granted?
I do, and it's times like this I realize it. I've been watching/listening to Chicago and then Harry Chapin on PBS, and the sheer joy has been replaced by a kind of ennui, or perhaps a subtle awe at the wonder that's sounds formed in such a way to make us feel alive.

1. I was just searching for some Chapin tonight.
It was raining hard in 'Frisco
I needed one more fare to make my night
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down
She got in at the light

Oh, where you going to, my lady blue
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain
She just looked out the window
She said, Sixteen Parkside Lane

Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before
But she said, I'm sure you're mistaken
And she didn't say anything more

It took a while, but she looked in the mirror
And she glanced at the license for my name
A smile seemed to come to her slowly
It was a sad smile, just the same

And she said, How are you Harry
I said, How are you Sue
Through the too many miles
And the too little smiles
I still remember you

It was somewhere in a fairy tale
I used to take her home in my car
We learned about love in the back of a Dodge
The lesson hadn't gone too far

You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
And I took off to find the sky

Oh, I've got something inside me
To drive a princess blind
There's a wild man, wizard
He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind
Oh, I've got something inside me
Not what my life's about
'Cause I've been letting my outside tide me
Over 'til my time, runs out

(Yes, she's flying, afraid to fall)
(I'll tell you why baby's crying)
('Cause she's dying, aren't we all)

There was not much more for us to talk about
Whatever we had once was gone
So I turned my cab into the driveway
Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns

And she said, we must get together
But I knew it'd never be arranged
And she handed me twenty dollars
For a two fifty fare
She said, Harry, keep the change

Well, another man might have been angry
And another man might have been hurt
But another man never would've let her go
I stashed the bill in my shirt

And she walked away in silence
It's strange, how you never know
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for
Such a long, long time ago

You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
And I took off for the sky

And here, she's acting happy
Inside her handsome home
And me, I'm flying in my taxi
Taking tips, and getting stoned
I go flying so high, when I'm stoned

4. not really music persay...
but I do take for granted certain bands. My listening habits, are down right idiotic, to say the least. I buy a cd, and then...I don't listen to it for a month, or two...or even longer, and then out of the blue, i listen to it, and i enjoy it, and then i end up listening to the same 8-10 cds for over a damn year, if not longer...then i get tired of those 8-10 cds, and bust out with other cds, i bought during that time period, and repeat process...and at the same time, i neglect my fav bands, and then i got into a huge retro phase, rehashing all the awesome music I all ready had, from years previous...

8. I don't think anybody's getting this
I didn't mean "No, I have a lot of CDs and I listen to them all the time." You can listen to music every waking moment and still take it for granted.

I meant, do you forget to feel music? To appreciate it for the miracle it is?

I do.

And when I remember, it's like discovering it all over again.

9. Sometimes, when I'm listening, whether it's CD or
the radio or even my kids' concerts at school...it just hits me; that sounds can be woven together like that and reach all the way down and grab hold of something and just...make me react. There have been times when I've teared up...just because.

Other times, yeah...I do take it for granted. It's just There and I don't think about it. I'll turn it up or I'll sing along or whatever but I don't Feel it. At least not the same way.

12. Not usually.

I live in a very quiet world (except for my whispering parrot & the conversations of the other parrots). When I turn on my Cd's, I do it because I truly love the way music moves me. Sometimes I cry and sometimes I can't stop myself from singing and dancing along with the tunes.

13. At times I do.
I have it around me nearly all of the time (currently The Early Music show on B.B.C. Radio 3) - yet think how a fwe short years ago there was no artificial reproduction and so to have music one would have to make music oneself.

14. I appreciate music best when I'm stoned.
I normally need more input than just music. Except when I'm high then I can just relax and focus on an album or two and really get into every little detail. Otherwise music is background noise for everything else. It's always on, I may even sing along once in a while but most of my attention is elsewhere.

16. No, I don't think I do
Music often moves me to tears and I don't usually have music for background noise but as something I actively listen to. The idea that all humans find ways to make music really fascinates me - it's a trite saying but it's true - music really is a universal language.
