Poll question: Will you go see the Da Vinci Code?
With all the controversy surrounding the release next weekend of the "Da Vinci Code," I wanted to poll people here at DU and ask them whether the controversy has deterred their appetite for watching the film.

He's watchable in anything. Except...I'm just not jazzed to see this. The book was ok...but I didn't obesess about it or anything.

5. My husband and I read the book
My husband read the book even before it became popular because he enjoys the author's stories. We will probably see it just to see how they did it. We have tended to be disappointed though when we see movies based on books that we have read.

13. No.
The book suffers from a common complaint of American writers (no offence, I'm sure we'd do the same in reverse), that Brown really can't even begin to get British characters within a million miles of being believable (not the only thing he can't write about). Add in that it is pushing a theory which was shown to be a fraud years ago. The book wasn't particularly interesting. &c.&c. I can't say I've got much inclination to go and see it at all.

not well-written at all. What controversy?

I think Hanks is overexposed, and a wild mismatch for Audrey Tatou

46. I agree - the book was poorly written
The dialogue was unbearable. I had to force myself to finish the last 20 pages of the book (what does that say
about a mystery?) It reminded me of a Grisham book, i.e., written with a future
screenplay (written by someone else) in mind.

However, the subject matter is very interesting to me, so I plan to see the movie, and expect
it to be much better than the book. I don't know anything about Audrey Tatou, however.

25. It looks better than the book (maybe only to me)
Ron Howard did an infinitely better job visualizing the story than I ever could. Watching the previews so far, I've been thinking, gee, I don't remember *that* happening quite like that.

I also, pathetically, didn't understand the end. Hopefully Ron Howard got it and will enlighten me to it.

Should be a winner.

The conspiracy stuff? Nah, the Priory of Scion was debunked and verified as a hoax years ago. Just going to watch the movie as a piece of fiction (the way the author intended).

I might not see it in the theatre but will probably rent it later.

Book wasn't that great but was what I wanted at the time-breezy and fast paced. The book's not the reason for me to watch. I'll see it because I'm a Tom Hanks fan.

The book is just a suspense novel, nothing more, nothing less. After reading it, I wanted nothing so much as a trip to the U.K. and then France. :-)

It can drive me crazy to see the changes made to a book in a film adaptation, but I figure The Da Vinci Code might be fun due to the cast. Tom Hanks is not my favorite, but I like Audrey Tautou, Juergen Prochnow, Alfred Molina, and of course Jean Reno and Ian McKellen (not that the latter two are a couple or anything ).

I liked the book (can't say I loved it, but I liked it), and am interested to see how it translates to the big screen. I'm rather looking forward to it. (I must say that I had Leigh Teabing pictured entirely differently until I read that McKellan was playing him, and then my mind immediately discarded the physical image it had created of Teabing.)

I'll probably rent the movie on DVD just so we can have a good time pointing out the wild inaccuracies in the plot. I can't imagine how so many talented people got involved with such schlock. I'm dying to see what they did with the climatic scene in which the grandparents engage in ritual sex.

42. Other: no interest in it.
I've talked to plenty of other atheists who have read the book, and the general concensus is that it's a book of bad fiction (The Da Vinci Code) based on a book of bad fiction (Holy Blood, Holy Grail) based on a book of bad fiction (The Bible). Frankly, that's more redundancy than I want to deal with.

I do, however, love the inherent hypocrisy of religious leaders speaking out against this book. They are asking their followers to suddenly develop critical thinking, a demand for evidence, skepticism, logic, etc., in other worse, all the things they encourage their followers to not do in order to get them to buy into the Magic Sky Fairy, reject evolution, embrace geocentrism, insist that the moon is a light source rather than reflecting the sun's light, etc., etc., etc.

49. I will see it, despite it being a Ron Howard film of a low-rent novel.
A low-rent novel that I found impossible to put down and that was a real page turner, yes; but, in th end, still a low-rent novel.

This might be the one movie that Ron Howard doesn't totally fuck up - he has good actors AND the story is thin and implausible enough, and devoid of any real humanity in the characters, that it could be the perfect fit for Howard's incontinent and artistically void directing style.
