Damn. Found a baby bird with a broken wing and leg...
I think I probably need to euthanize the poor sweet thing - any suggestions? Ether so she just goes to sleep?

I have seven cats in the house, I can't convalesce her and I have to leave tomorrow for work - just not a good situation. Would a vet euthanize her tomorrow? Do they do that for 'wild' birds? (She looks like a sparrow or other sweet little brown bird).

1. Do you have a wildlife rehabilitation group near you?
You could call an Emergency Vet and ask. The wildlife rehab organization out here will pick the wild animal/bird up and take care of it from there.

Good luck. Poor little thing.

and we're so remote and rural and she's so injured I don't know if they'd even take her.

2. Well, here's one humane way to do it...
Sadly, I had to euthanize a bird as well... it was very sad.

I wrapped the baby up in some soft tissue and placed her in a plastic ziplock baggie, pushed the air out and placed her in the freezer.

I hated doing it, but I had no other way to relieve her suffering that wouldn't freak me out far, far worse.

I'm sorry. Best to get it over with asap.

3. I didn't realize, there's no way to save a broken legged bird.

9. It's almost impossible to save a bird with broken bones, especially
one so tiny and young. Their little teeny bones are hollow, and all sorts of infections are likely, and setting the things are like setting bits of paper. It's just not good to make the poor things suffer so much.

The best thing we can do is just make sure their suffering passes as quickly as possible.

6. we got some ether....
ether-soaked cotton, a jar, birdie in jar.

We euthanized a few mice like that - had those godawful plastic strips they stick to (but of course struggle and squeak and it's terrible). Never used them after we caught two mice one night. It was freezer time for those little guys, too.

Shit.

Thanks for the sympathy.

4. Squeeze it tightly enough that its heart stops
But not so tightly you break its bones.

5. I like watching and feeding birds, but you are going a
little overboard!

7. in what way?
I won't let anything suffer if there's any way I can help. If I'd just been in the shower, dammit, I wouldn't have heard the poor birdie crying out - I went to see what was going on, shooed away the neighbor cat, and there she was, afraid and injured. Perhaps I should have let the cats do their thing, but ...
