Pink bats for breast cancer research
Edited on Sun May-14-06 03:19 PM by Oeditpus Rex
In recognition of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, ballplayers today are swinging pink bats. So far (it's only the first inning), Kenny Lofton and Nomar Garciaparra have batted with them. (They didn't get hits, but Randy Winn just started the bottom of the first with a double, using a brown bat.)

Today, appropriately, Major League Baseball is sponsoring a fundraiser for breast cancer research. At http://www.mlb.com you can make a flat pledge or a pledge per strikeout during today's games. You can also buy neat stuff, like pink caps with the breast-cancer logo ribbon, with a portion of proceeds going to the foundation. (My pink Dodgers cap is on the way.)

Great way to honor our moms, no? :loveya:

Edit: Typo. (Sorry, mom.)

Sorry, sweetie, but I don't think too many people are around right now.....

I click on the Breast Cancer site link every day......

I'm not particularly into buying stuff from them, though....

Sorry......

3. Last weekend I participated in a Walk for Breast Cancer Research.
Edited on Sun May-14-06 04:05 PM by IsIt1984Yet
The ACS 5-mile "Making Strides" event along Milwaukee's lakefront. The event raised about $300k for research - my team raised $8k and I personally raised about $1100 worth of that. I had the honor of walking alongside survivors and families of those who've been touched by cancer. It was truly inspiring and heartbreaking.

You're right; it is a great way to honor our mom's and all of the fabulous women in our lives. :loveya:

To finding a cure :toast:

I simulcast whenever I can. You get better descriptions on radio, plus there's usually a slight delay. Today it's like four seconds, so I can be online, listen to the radio and still see all of a play.

It's on my little bitty B&W in here. If I want to see it in color and big, I go into the living room, where there's another radio goin'. And I can see that teevee if I lean forward just a bit.

Fandom. :D

19. I even admire it when the other guys do somethin' good
Matheny (Giants) just threw out Ethier (Dodgers) stealing second for the third out of the seventh — which was key, because now the pitcher's spot will lead off the eighth for LA. And since O Perez just came in to relieve Seo, they might not want to bat for him, depending on how this inning goes.

(Dodgers are leading 2-1, which leaves the door open for all kinds of strategic possibilities.)

Update: O Perez let the Giants tie it in the eighth, and they did indeed pinch-hit for him in the top of the ninth. Martinez, the pinch-hitter, walked, then Furcal singled him to second. Then Lofton bunted and Kline, the Giants' reliever, threw it into left field. Both runners score. 4-2.

Alou then took out Kline, who hollered "FUCK!" with the camera right on him as he walked to the dugout.

W00t!

I've never heard a Maryland accent before. Is it somewhat 'southern' sounding? Is there an actor, personality or tv show that's from/features Baltimore?

Our abooooot really isn't...we elongate certain vowels, but really it's more like 'abowt', whereas some areas in the US it's 'aboat' (to our ear).

As though we can't quite figure out our identity. I can't think of anyone famous who has it.

Actually... if you can ever get your hands on episodes of the show "Homicide: Life on the Street" you might catch the accent in there. None of the main characters will have it, but local guest actors might.

28. I used to run a cancer research information room
so I had a lot of contact with the various groups. I honestly never heard anything bad about this particular foundation. BUT I have to say that there is nothing more "political" than cancer research foundations- they are all competing for the same limited funds and even though you'd expect to find mutual support and cooperation, that's not always the case.

Cynical quote from one doctor I know: "We've reached the point where there are more people making a living from cancer than dying from it".

But to dismiss an organization that does good, and a lot of it, because of its politics is to throw out the baby with the bath water.

At least, in the Giants-Dodgers game.

I saw Lofton, Garciaparra and Seo, and one guy with the Giants. Durham, maybe.

Garciaparra used it only in his first trip, though, and he flied out. He's one of the most... I won't say "superstitious," but one of the most ritualistic players in the game, though, so I was surprised he used one at all.

Somethin' happened with Seo's bat, though. It was freakin' ORange.

63. to be honest
i think it's icky the way we are supposed to constantly link "breast cancer," "pink," and "moms" in our mind

it takes a bit away from the special day to focus on disease

we had an ad one year in our newspaper, saying to take your mom to get a mammogram for mother's day

i mean, excuse me, crap, one day of the year and it has to be abt death and disease? let alone that whether we want the men to know it or not, getting a mammogram is damn painful and horrible and something i dread for weeks

what's wrong w. a nice champagne brunch for mother's day

and this is leaving aside that i've heard breast cancer survivors say they get NO help from the susan komen foundation and that apparently it's a way to channel all money their way into whatever research they may or may not think helpful while not actually providing anything but a brochure to women who are need in of treatment now

sorry to rain on the parade and all
