I will take you home again Kathleen
My Dad would sing that song almost so low I could barely hear it. Sometimes he might whistle the tune. I doubt he was even aware of it.

Kathleen was my mother. She and Dad were divorced when I was four years old. I went with Dad.

I waited and waited for Dad to take Kathleen home again.

He never did. But years later as Dad lay dieing I brought Kathleen to him. I left them alone together. They were holding hands.

A thought on my Mother's day.

2. My dear 180......
Your very sweet, sad story brings the sting of tears to my eyes.....

It sounds as though they never truly stopped loving one another....

Perhaps they just could not live together, even though their love went on...

Blessings on you for this, today!

3. I sing that song to myself fairly often
I came to know it through Elvis' version (obscure, as much as anything he did can be -- he stayed behind after a 1971 recording session, sat alone at the piano, and recorded this and two other ballads that were on his mind) but it's a beautiful song by any measure:

I'll take you home again, Kathleen
Across the ocean wild and wide
To where your heart has ever been
Since first you were my bonny bride

The roses all have left your cheek
I watch them fade away and die
Your voice so soft when ere you'd speak
And tears bedim your lovely eyes

Oh, I will take you home, Kathleen
To where your heart shall feel no pain
And when the fields are soft and green
I will take you to your home, Kathleen

4. Yes Forest
It is a sad ballad. Mom and Dad divorced near the end of the Great Depression. I guess many families could not survive the pressure of the times.

7. That is so sad.
They must have still had a bond. Sometimes, even despite an ugly and hateful divorce, one party never quite gives up the ties. I saw this with my own parents.

Hugs to you. :pals:
