Holy sh*t! I just watched a dog kill a cat
Outside my apartment. Could've stopped it if we had a hose.

I almost clocked the dog in the head but since the cat was pretty much impaled on his fangs that seemed like a bad idea.

Is there anything I could have done? The cat owner was holding the dog by the neck and getting bit herself. Didn't seem to help. We finally broke em up with the second pitcher of water but by then I assume it was too late for the cat. The dog's teeth were going straight through her abdomen.

I don't think I'll be sleeping tonight.

2. I have seen that to, but it two dogs killing the cat.
The poor cat didn 't have a chance, I can still hear that poor cat scream.

You did try to save cat, the cat's owner should get to a Doctor for the dog bite.

4. Did you call animal control?
I hate to do that since they'll almsot certainly euthanize the dog, but it sounds like that's probably the best thing in this case, sad as that is.

5. Cops are all over it now
They have the dog leashed to a stairway and I guess they're waiting for animal control. I love dogs and killing this one actually crossed my mind. I have a big nasty commando knife that would've gone through his neck like butter. The only thing that stopped me was I figured the dog owner was nearby. In fact, since the cat owner was holding the dog, I thought she was the dog owner while it was happening.

27. For a lot of reasons
But primarily because this dog is going to die because whatever humans are responsible for it (or were, since there's no collar it may be abandoned and somewhat feral) didn't provide it with the care and supervision it needs to keep this kind of thing from happening. Because it's likely that some dipshit backyard breeder bred agression into this dog. Be cause no dog should be wandering the streets alone (he could have picked a fight with a car or a child as easily as with a cat.) It's a shame that irresponsibe people let this happen. They'll likely never be identified and punished, but the dog will die for thier inaction.

For all we know in capable loving hands this could have been a really sweet loving dog.

Hard to believe after seeing the way she got mauled, but apparently the cat is going to live.

if the dog gave her puncture wounds.

19. Our kitties terrorize our 80# Pit....
He tries to play with them, but when they hiss and swat he runs away in a panic...it's hilarious! He looks like his eyes are going to fall out of his head! One of the last foster kitties we had in liked dogs...Deuce-dork got along with him fine. Silly dog really liked that Sphinx-mix kitten we fostered a few months ago...he'd pick the kitten up by the scruff, set him up on the bed, then jump on the bed himself and give him a slurpy bath. Now we have a cat my grandma couldn't care for anymore (she mostly tolerates him), and a Lynx Point Siamese my wife brought home from the vet clinic where she works, named Casper. Darn cat jumps up on my shoulders when I'm on the terlit. I think he's starting to warm to Deuce, but he can be a bit rambunctiously playful, which cats generally don't care for in a dog. ;)

That dog just ain't right... :D Then again, none of our dogs are normal! (We do pit bull rescue, and small reptile rescue, and sometimes foster other critters. Now we have two cats as well...I live in a zoo!)

12. kinda bizarre
but today I witnessed a cat kill a bird. I kinda intervened, chased the cat off, but the bird was already done for. The cat came right back too as I headed off to work. If it had been a squirrel I might have done violence to the cat because I am fond of squirrels, even if they are just rats with bushy tails.

13. Damn Beatrix Potter for making squirrels "cute"
Squirrel Nutkin... forsooth.

They are TREE RATS. Nasty critters.

The irony? My cats LOVE to watch "squirrel tv," and our property is teeming with the things... so I FEED THE TREE RATS. Ears of corn, etc.... so my kittie can watch them... gods, what we do for our kids -- furry or not.

squirrels, songbirds, y chipmonks. my cats have a "garden" off the deck; fenced w/ hardware cloth as well as insect screened, clear lexan roof for sunlight. they love to sit out there y watch the wildlife!

i like the squirrels though, as all the rest. even if they tear up my thistle feeders for the thrushes. recently bought metal/glass to keep them out of those.

25. i built it myself,
Edited on Tue May-16-06 10:25 AM by jukes
over the course of 2 years. i have minimal carpentry skills, but was *very* careful w/ measurements & angles. also, i cdnt dedicate all my time to construction because of my other commitments.

i estimate approximately $1500 for materials, purchased as needed or w/ funds available from tax refunds.

downside was a construction site & accompanying "mess" on my property for the 2 years, + some carping from my fundy neighbors (who really only disapproved of my intent & who wanted to "proselytize" me into the neighborhood fundy-lifestyle).

it was a worthwhile project, & my kitties are *very* happy w/it, + they tend to perform their business in the fresh air, which keeps the house cleaner. ( i formed a gravel-bed w/ drains on the underside of the existing deck, which was built on a slope; hence, i can "hose-down" the area, watering the grass and cleansing the gravel.)

1/2 the garden is shaded by a pre-existing white-oak, from which feeders are hung, and which provides shelter for the wildlife.

EDIT: the enclosed garden measures about 14'X20' w/ roof 12' high @ peak & 8' high at eves; a smaller area wd be suitable for 4-5 cats & wd be much cheaper. rainwater drains down the molded-in grooves in the lexan & drips/cascades onto a gravel bed surrounding garden, w/ 4" perf drainpipe buried in gravel to lead water off-site. i plan to add a indoor/outdoor ceiling fan under the lexan this summer to aid circulation & cool the garden for kitties!

18. you'd have to throw the book at the cat owner too.......
leash laws apply to cats, as well as dogs, in most places.

28. true, but it might be argued that the cat was "under owners control"
Edited on Tue May-16-06 11:04 AM by Kashka-Kat
Dog obviously was not. I was thinking about something like that which happened here a while back where owner was prosecuted for sicking his dog on cats & killing them-- wasnt leash law that was the issue, it was that the dog owner was held responsible for the damage caused to the other person's property (i.e. the cat.)

30. That's sad
But sometimes there's just nothing you can do. Now if a dog got hold of one of MY cats then the question would be "Which firearm shall I use...?"
