Women of DU - a makeup question
Actually, any of you guys who wear makeup can chime in, too if you have any input. I don't want to leave you out.

The question - I haven't worn makeup for years and I don't own any right now. I'm going to my daughter's wedding at the beginning of next month and want to look nice. Rather than go out and buy a bunch of stuff I'll use once and never use again, is there any type of place that you can go to that will do your makeup? I mean, you can go get your nails done and your hair. What about your face?

Suggestions?

1. If craigslist is active in your area
I'd post looking for a MUA (make-up artist) with the text from your post here. If that's not an option, I'd ask at a beauty parlor if they can recommend anyone.

2. whoever you do get, do a practice seession
do not expect someone you don;t know to get it right that morning. you might get a shock.
you can probably get a referral through your hair salon or a beauty supply store.
i'd honestly just meet them before for a little lesson + coaching what products to buy and do it yourself. i think if you hire somebody they are going to feel obligated to pile it on. not good if that's abnormal for you.
i'd also tell them you want to " look natural" and "just enhance" your look.
you want to do at most a bit of glamour on the eyes or lips not both. also flashy earrings or a necklace, not both, unless you're in porn.
;)

5. I was thinking of doing a little porn after the ceremony
But there may not be time....

Yes, I don't want to look like a geisha. The problem is the wedding is out of town. Which means that my reply to post #1 makes no sense - I wasn't thinking. What a moran I can be!

Anyway.... maybe I'll ask my daughter to see what she can discover there. I will be in town a few days before the wedding so maybe I could have a run-through with someone. I wouldn't even know what to buy anymore as far as shades etc. because it's been so long. So either someone to advise or better yet, someone to do it for me would be good.

12. And here I was about to say
that gee, you're near Santa Cruz, you should have no problem! I think asking your daughter is a good idea. She's probably been given names if she's done any "traditional" bride stuff, anyway. And did i say many congratulations on your daughter's wedding!

13. Thank you!!
I'm SO excited. My older daughter is married but I didn't attend her wedding - it was small and spur of the moment. So this is my first time as "Mother of the Bride" which really trips me out!

4. Many upscale stores offer free makeup "doing" during off hours. If it was
an afternoon wedding I think several in Chicago do them -like Marshall Field's (I'll never call it "Macy's.)you could get it done in the morning.

6. When I was in my friend's wedding
She had us, the bride's maids, get our make up done at the local beauty school, which probably wasn't the best place but was cheap. I am assuming that there are salons where they do make up in addition to hair/and or nails if the beauty school students were doing that.

8. I'll ask my daughter about that
I know she's setting up appointments for us all to get our hair done - maybe we can do makeup at the same time. Thanks. :hi:

7. Upscale beauty salons
Here in Seattle, Gene Juarez Salons do make up. I don't think they operate down in California but look for upscale salons with spas. You may want to treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure too.
Enjoy your day of beauty

10. If you do go have someone do your make-up....
STRESS to them that you usually don't wear it, and you want something subtle, but you don't want to look like a 3 dollar hooker.

15. Clinique will do a make up at the counter for you, I think
But you don't have to spend a lot of money.

You can do it all at Walgreens, actually. There are even little kits you can buy which have coordinated blush and eyshadows etc in a compact.

Foundation is not expensive at all ..especially L'Oreal which is really good stuff.

Maybe your girlfriends have some old Clinique samples ..I always have something of theirs that I have more than one of from their eternal bonus kits.

16. sephora will do it.
pick someone who's makeup you like and ask them to do it. I don't know if they can do it on a strict schedule though. Any nice salon will charge you 25-75 dollars for an appointment, and should provide a consult for free about a week or two before the wedding.

18. Burt's Bees $10.00 Make-up sample pack
has everything you need- lip color in many shades, eyeshadows, lightly tinted moisturizer in several shades, blush in several shades, and some other stuff that I don't remember off the top of my head.
So that's one option for ya'.

Have fun at the wedding! :)
