Stupid frickkin heartburn
I figured now that I'm a mature adult I should get a few hours of sleep before getting up early and taking one last crack at the books before the 8 AM examine.

Unfortunately I should also have resupplied my medicine cabinet with antacid. Because I spent the first two hours of that "few hours" in that awful indecisive state where you're in too much pain to fall asleep but to tired too get up. The former won out so after a quick run to the Circle K I"m back on campus and hitting the notes.

This is going to be a long one.

1. R-O-L-A-I-D-S
the original gritty, chalky, peppermint flavor. I NEVER get caught without them. But if you don't have antacids, try chewing gum. Don't know why, but it usually works for me.

2. I'm up with heatburn/reflux too. Bummer.
I saw my doc yesterday (yearly physical) and he scheduled an endoscopy with a gastroenterologist to evaluate this rather frequent problem. I'm a bit concerned since my dad had an esophogectomy last May because of reflux-related esophogeal cancer.

I took a Zantac about thirty minutes ago. Usually, the fire goes out about an hour after I take the Zantac. Usually.

3. A few things that should help
1. Stop caffeine intake.
2. Stay away from excessive sodium/salt intake
3. Drink plenty of water to dilute sodium
4. Antacids only make your situation worse, ween off them.
5. Don't eat ANYTHING for 3 hours before going to sleep.

I had the exact same problem and now I'm acid reflux free without medication. Now I only get it sometimes when I eat pizza before going to bed. Good luck!

10. Good tips....when I started cutting down on carbohydrates
especially refined ones like white flour, sugars, etc., my chronic indigestion and heartburn lessened dramatically.

I eat one meal a day with carbs, but my other meals are more protein/veggie/salad and some fruit oriented.

It's worth a try, you guys suffering from this most uncomfortable problem!

7. I know my problem is diet. Eating out too much in Dallas.
I'm back in Dallas, where I tend to eat heavier, richer meals. Next week I'll go back to the mountains, and my reflux will improve. In fact, I have lost over 20 pounds in the mountains in the last few months. In the mountains I eat at home and eat light. Think there might be a stress overlay to reflux here in the wicked city? I do.

8. I've been a vegetarian for more than five years
but I still get heartburn quite a bit. I do eat a lot of junk food though. If I cut out the chips and salsa (not to mention the margeritas) I'd probably have less of a problem.

9. Sodium is the number 1 culprit
if you can cut that you will see dramatic improvement.

11. With me, refined carbs are the culprit.....
eating veggies, salads, fruits, grains, nuts, beans, and good proteins (also animal, I'm not vegetarian) without the sugars, chips, fried foods, and white refined grains has helped my problem tremendously.

Nice finding a solution with diet adjustments instead of meds and procedures, isn't it? (I hate medical procedures!!!!!) :-)

12. Use OTC Prilosec for 2 weeks, it will usually stop the reflux
so that the erosion going on in your esophagus can heal.

My father died in '79 from undiagnosed esophageal cancer after years of heartburn treated with Tums-type medication.

You need to stop the erosion from becoming cancerous, and if you have a weak gastric valve, which is usually a genetic thing, diet isn't likely to totally stop the problem of acid coming out into your esophagus.

13. When I was in my twenties,
some thirty years ago, I had frequent ongoing heartburn. Never could figure out why. It eventually went away, and I actually forgot that I used to have it all the time until quite recently, when one of my kids asked me a question about it.

I also had heartburn while pregnant, but that's somewhat different.

My diet has gradually changed over the years, and I don't consume as much fat as I used to, but it's still what most would consider a typical American diet -- pizza, beer, Chinese food, Taco Bell, salads, eggs, homemade chocolate chip cookies, etc etc etc. We eat out a lot. I like to cook. Have NO idea why it went away. My only theory is that I was much thinner then, and tended to be constantly dieting to keep my weight down. Like so many, I've gained weight over the years, but about two years ago got 30 pounds off, and I'm trying to take off another 15 or so.

I suspect that the causes of heartburn are highly individual, as noted by the different people who have already posted.

14. Get Nexium (the purple pill) from your Doctor.
I had horrible heartburn for years. It worked for me.

15. Have you seen a doctor? Not to be an alarmist, but over the years
reflux got so bad for me I ended up having surgery-Nissen fundoplication-where they wrap your stomach around your esophagous in order to stem the acid. If it seems to be getting worse, I urge you to see a doctor. This is my public service announcement for the day. :7

18. Instant fix.
It's better to eat less, cut out foods that exacerbate your heartburn etc., but if you are caught without Rolaids, Zantac or other remedies, here's one that works instantly.

1 Teaspoon of baking soda in a half cup of water.

Slug it down and your heartburn is gone.

22. Reminds me of a line I heard recently
from a comic, "I was standing in line at the grocery store behind a guy who was buying Rolaids, Gas-X, and Pepto-Bismol. I told the checker, 'hurry the hell up and check him out, he's gonna BLOW!"

Cleanup on register two, we need a mop on register two...
